Week of Awareness 2009 Week of Awareness mini-poster

This annual series of events leads up to the National Day of Silence, organized by GLSEN. Explore the variety of events being offered this week!  All these events have Facebook events - make sure to join these events and share them with everyone you know at SNC!

All these events are being planned and put on by a few dedicated Rainbow Alliance members.  Do these topics get you interested?  You should get involved!  Check out the Member Handbook and our home page to find out how to get involved.

You can also access our promotional posters online in our documents and poster collection for Week of Awareness (www.snc.edu/rainbow/documents.html inside the Events 2008-09 and Week of Awareness folders) - both the full-size version of the mini posters here as well as some alternate designs are available!

This page has been designed to be printable - all the important web addresses are listed, so print it off and pass it around!

Poster Campaign

Tuesday, April 14-Friday, April 17

Keep your eyes peeled on campus to learn more about LGBTQ and allied folks and the issues that affect all of us!

"Declare your identity. Declare your support." Poster Collection Kick-off

There's never been a better time to publicly show your support of Rainbow Alliance!  Our new poster collection is being launched during the Week of Awareness, and we'd like to see these signs increasingly prevalent across campus throughout the week and after!  (The displays are not limited to this week alone - keep them up as a permanent display of support!)  This new poster collection lets you show your support in an attractive poster, and also optionally claim an additional identity (member of this community, Catholic, student, etc.) - over 50 identities, each in a color and black-and-white version.

Day of Silence - Sign Up and Materials Available

Tuesday, April 14-Friday, April 17, Campus Center Info Desk and Union (Caf) Lobby

The Day of Silence, Friday, April 17, is a nationally recognized day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take a vow of silence to bring attention to the verbal abuse, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies.

All SNC students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate.  Sign-up sheets and materials for participants are available all week at the Campus Center information desk and in the Union Lobby.

Materials are also available in our documents collection - please contact us to let us know you are participating if you choose to get your materials online instead of at the sign-up locations.

"Abomination" video and discussion Video mini-poster

Tuesday, April 14, Cofrin 11, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., free.

SNC Rainbow Alliance will be screening the entirety of the "Abomination" documentary film, which was shown in segments during iCamp/Boxes & Walls. A powerful depiction of the realities of "ex-gay" therapy, "Abomination" features interviews with both gay and straight individuals whose lives have been affected by ex-gay therapy programs. Discussion to follow.

All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend!

SNC LGBTQ Panel Discussion Panel mini-poster

Wednesday, April 15, Campus Center Lounge, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., free.

Interested in learning more about LGBTQ issues on campus?

A panel of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) individuals and straight allies from the SNC community will be speaking as part of Rainbow Alliance's Week of Awareness. Panelists will answer audience questions as well as moderator suggestions, so bring your own questions to add to the discussion!

LGBTQ Ally Training Session Ally Training mini-posters

Thursday, April 16, Campus Center room 210, 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m., free.

A new LGBTQ Ally Training Session has been scheduled and is open to all SNC students!  This interactive, educational program teaches students how to be an Ally, working against anti-LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning) bias and discrimination.  Students who attend and sign the Ally Pledge will receive a custom certificate/sign to publicly display their Ally status.

This can count as HR hours for education students!

Space is limited and the event is expected to fill up, so learn more and register online as soon as possible.

Day of Silence and Breaking the Silence Day of Silence mini-poster

Friday, April 17:

7 a.m.-3 p.m. Campus-wide (Day of Silence)

3 p.m. in front of Main Hall (Breaking the Silence)

Today when walking around campus, you will see a number of people with signs who will remain silent all day.  Their actions are in solidarity and in recognition of the national Day of Silence.

The Day of Silence is a nationally recognized day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take a vow of silence to bring attention to the verbal abuse, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies.

All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to join us in front of Main Hall at 3 P.M. where we will ceremonially "break the silence" with a minute of screaming at 3:05.
