Day 5 - We started the day with a tour of the city of Kalamata, which included a Byzantine church and a monastery. The church at the monastery was small, but beautifully painted and decorated. After touring some of the historical sites in Kalamata, we finally got the opportunity to relax on the beach and go swimming in the Mediterranean! There was a long rocky pier that extended into the sea, so lot of us had fun jumping off the end of the pier. A couple of us tried swimming back to the beach from the pier, but Chris Peterson and his "doggie paddle" only made it a little bit of the way before Paul had to save him and head back to the pier.

In the late afternoon we had our second game against the Ekaskenop Men's basketball club of Kalamata. The gym we played in was extremely hot and the floor was made of a hard rubber that somewhat felt like a wrestling mat. The game started out good, and we played much better than the last game. We had a good lead for most of the game and held on for the win even though they cut the lead to seven in the second half. It was a good win for us after the last one. We got back to the hotel for a late dinner and got ready for the next day.

Day 6 - We had another early wake up call before we had to head out back towards Athens, which was a good five hours away. Along the way we stopped at Nafplion, which was a nice place to shop for souvenirs and look at the view, since a castle was at the top of a mountain overlooking the town. Next, we stopped at Epidaurus, which is the site of the sanctuary of Asclepius. This place is known for a spectacular theater that has the best acoustics in the world. The sound was so good that even though it seated 17,000 people, you could hear a penny drop from anywhere in the theater!

The last stop on the way back to Athens was a short stop at the Corinth Canal. It was amazing to see the size canal, as it was about 80 meters deep and stretched for four miles. After that we headed back to Athens and said goodbye to Yannis, our tour guide, since tomorrow we are going on our cruise of the Mediterranean without him. We have the rest of the night to relax before our cruise and our last game tomorrow. We will check back soon to let you know how it goes!

Day 8 - Waking up early once again and another good breakfast and it was off to our cruise boat for the all day cruise on the Mediterranean Sea and explore three Greek Islands. The cruise boat had three levels with the dining area in the middle. The entire team stayed on the top deck and enjoyed the sun while working on a tan and enjoying the slight breeze. About half the guys got a game of cards going. Coach Grzesk won a game of hearts between himself, Kenny Rideout, Chris Peterson, and myself (Jake). I'm sure he won't let us forget that.

When arriving in Hydra we were able to get off the boat and walk around the beautiful island. Some shopped for more souvenirs and others went swimming. Some of the guys jumped into the sea from a rocky platform. A few of the braver guys on the team found a 35-foot cliff to jump off of. All in all, Hydra, the view and scenery was amazing! We had lunch on the second floor of the boat. During lunch, the band played music and sang. A group of David Wipperfurth, Chris Peterson and Kyle Johnsen did a Greek dance with about 15 other people. John Taylor did a little improv of Frank Sinatra's L-O-V-E song which got the entire place laughing. There were a lot of pictures taken and there may be even a video of it floating around!

The next stop was to the island of Poros where we had only about 35 minutes to get off and explore. It was about 90 degrees outside so most the guys just jumped into the sea and swam. The last island on our stop was Aegina which we had the most time to spend there about two hours. Like the other two island there was a place to swim and get food. After two hours of having fun in the sun it was time to head back to Athens for the game. When arriving to the stadium some of the guys got a good rest on the bus and were focused to play.

The stadium was home to the Maroussi Basketball Club who was an A1 professional team in Greece. The team we played were the younger group of the club team. The game was a complete success - we won by 40 points. Every guy played a major role in the victory and it was a great way to end the trip and the basketball games. We headed back to our hotel for a late 11 p.m. dinner. Afterward, we were free to spend the rest of the night doing whatever. Most just went to bed since we had a 3:30 a.m. wake up call for our flight the next morning.

Day 9 - Heading home after a great week in Greece. We got a wake-up call at 3:30 a.m. since we had to be at the airport three hours before our flight out of Athens at 8:15 a.m. We said good by to our bus driver (Bobby) and the other guide -- another Yannis. Yannis was our guide for all the basketball games. He was a great guide and got along with all the players and families on the tour. After the four-hour flight to London, we had a couple more hours there before we got on our eight-hour flight back to Chicago. The bus finally pulled into De Pere around 8 p.m.

It was sad to have such a fun week in Greece come to an end, but it was exciting to get back home at the same time. We all had a blast!! It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip and we will never forget it. The memories will last forever and hopefully our success will continue into the next basketball season. Thanks to all - Jake and Paul signing off for one last time!!!!!!!!

MARIETTA, Ohio - Ashley Graybill won her second national championship of the 2009 track and field season with a rousing win of the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships at Marietta College's Don Drumm Stadium.

Graybill, who won the indoor 800-meter championship in March, won a strongly contested race. Graybill's school-record time of 2 minutes 9.18 seconds clipped The College of New Jersey's Jianna Spadacinni at the finish line, with Spadacinni finishing in 2:09.37. UW-Platteville's Jessica Scott, the runner-up to Graybill at this year's indoor meet, was third in 2:09.83.

St. Norbert track and field coach Don Augustine said Graybill was fifth with about 200 meters to go before an impressive finishing kick was the impetus to Graybill's win.

"She was about three wide on the outside with about 100 meters to go and she took off," Augustine said. "She passed the pack with about 80 meters to go and held on from there."

Graybill was the final qualifier into the eight-person finals after a time of 2:12.84 during Friday's trials, but became the first St. Norbert College track and field athlete to win national championships during both indoor and outdoor seasons. The national title in the outdoor 800 for Graybill was St. Norbert's first in outdoor track and field. Other than Graybill's two championships, Laura Salm's national titles in the indoor high jump in 1991 and 1993 are the only women's track and field national championships in St. Norbert history.

St. Norbert junior Jenny Scherer, who entered the 5,000-meter run as the 11th seed out of 18 entrants, finished fourth for her second All-America honor of the outdoor championships. Scherer also placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run on Thursday.

Scherer ran a time of 17:23.22 in temperatures soaring over 80 degrees. UW-Oshkosh's Ayla Mitchell won the event with a time of 17:14.52, while Carroll University's Megan O'Grady was second in 17:19.83. Carleton College's Simone Childs-Walker was third in 17:22.45.

St. Norbert recorded a top-10 team finish, placing in a tie for tenth with 20 points. The Green Knights, who finished eighth at the NCAA indoor meet in March, recorded their two highest team finishes in school history this season.

Day 3 - After an early wake up call we hit the road towards Delphi. During the drive we passed through the cities of Thiva and Livadia. These two cities were entrenched in the mountain side that supported many opportunities for great pictures. Our first stop in Delphi was the Temple of Apollo, where the oracle delivered her ambiguous prophecies. Here we also saw a ancient theater that seated 5,000 people, and a stadium that was placed toward the top of a mountain which meant a long walk for some!

After the Temple of Apollo we made our way to the museum with its collection of ancient works including the Sphinx of the Naxians, the Silver Bull, and the Charioteer. The evening concluded with shopping for souvenirs and a night out on the streets of Delphi!

Day 4 - The morning started with a delicious breakfast. This day was mostly a travel day as Olympia and Kalamata were hours away from Delphi. Our first stop was Olympia which was the site of the First Olympic Games. The weather was beautiful and very hot throughout the tour of Olympia. Here we saw the Temple of Zeus, which is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. Here we also saw the place where they light the torch for the Olympic games every four years. After the tour of the ruins, we broke for a lunch break and more souvenir shopping. Some ordered a hamburger expecting the norm, but received just a patty without the bun!

We boarded the coach and headed towards Kalamata, a three hour drive. Just checked into the hotel tonight where we have a great view of the Mediterranean Sea off the balcony. It is a Friday night here so there will be more people out and about. We will be here for the weekend and hope to swim in the sea as well as explore the night life. Game tomorrow, so we will check in soon. Jake and Paul signing off!

Day 1 - Depart from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. On our flight we all got our own personal TVs where we could watch a selection of movies, television shows or simply listen to music. After a seven-hour flight we were stuck in the London airport for another four hours. When finally arriving in Athens we went through a full 24-hour day of traveling. We arrived at 6 p.m. in Athens and going on few hours of sleep.

Day 2 - We started the day by touring the Acropolis which was very fascinating when learning about all the facts and how far the dates go back. Our tour guide, Yanni, was very informative. The city of Athens itself spreads vast miles in each direction and is extremely congested. Transportation seems to consist of more mopeds than cars and the mopeds feel free to drive wherever they would like including sidewalks and shops. The next stop was on to the Athens National Museum. The museum was made of mostly statues and sculptures of humans. The museum was hot!

On our next stop, the original modern Olympic stadium, which was very exciting to see since we are athletes. This stadium hosted the first modern games in 1896. We went back to the hotel to rest up before our first game.

Arriving at the gym we did not know what to expect. Rules were a bit different and it was hard to adjust to the 24-second shot clock and the extreme lack of fouls called. We made it out alive though! We were a little short handed playing without myself (Paul Mallers) and James Pfitzinger. James being out with the dislocated ankle and myself having surgery on my knees when returning home. The game itself did not go as planned. The Green Knights lost to Near East Basketball Club 79-60. Off to sleep soon to get ready for another great day tomorrow in Delphi! We'll check in again in a few days. Paul Mallers and Jake Dietz signing off!!!

OSHKOSH -- St. Norbert College battled in its second-ever NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament appearance but suffered a pair of losses in the Midwest Regional at E.J. Schneider Field.

The Green Knights suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 11-inning loss in their tournament opener before being eliminated 8-4 by top regional seed St. Olaf College. St. Norbert finished its season 23-15, the most games it has ever played in a season. The Green Knights have won at least 20 games five times in the last six years.

St. Norbert rallied from a 5-0 deficit against St. Scholastica and forced extra innings on Jared Yost's booming home run to left field to start the ninth inning, but ended up falling in extra innings.

St. Scholastica (36-5) scored twice in the first and three more times in the fourth for its early advantage, but the Green Knights came back to score four times in the top of the fifth. Kyle Johnsen reached on an infield error to start the frame, and Brandon Hintz singled him to third. Brett Birkholz followed with a run-scoring single, and a Jared Yost single loaded the bases. Tony Jandron's sacrifice fly to right plated Hintz, while Cory Fuller's double scored Birkholz. Garrick Fisher then hit a sacrifice fly to score Yost to complete the four-run, four-hit rally.

The Saints, ranked 10th in the D3baseball.com Top 25, scored an unearned run in the sixth before Yost and Jandron hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to cut it to 6-5. Yost then hit his home run over Wisconsin St. to square the game at 6-6 and force extra innings.

St. Norbert appeared to be in prime scoring position in the top of the 10th. Ryan Kehl singled, and with one out Ryan Gusick's single moved Kehl to third. But Hintz's fly ball center was too shallow to score Kehl and the Green Knights came up empty in the inning.

Chad Peterson opened the bottom of the 11th with a single and Sean Claughtery doubled off Jordan Vater to put runners at second and third with no outs. Tony Jandron came on to get a strikeout but Paul Kolodge's line drive down the third-base line brought Peterson home with the game-winning run.

Yost led St. Norbert at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double and home run along with three runs scored. Hintz was 2-for-4 and Kehl 2-for-5 as the Green Knights had 13 base hits.

Josh Retka picked up the win in relief for St. Scholastica, allowing one run and five this in four innings of relief. Vater took the loss in one-plus inning of relief. Justin Wotachek started for St. Norbert and worked the first nine innings, allowing 11 hits, four earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts.

Against St. Olaf, the Green Knights got out to the early lead with a 4-0 advantage through four innings, but the Oles (31-12) scored at least once in each of the last five innings to claim the win.

Yost singled in Brandon Hintz in the third inning and Gusick then hit an opposite-field three-run home run in the fourth to put the Green Knights ahead 4-0.

Tyler Johnson's two-run home run in the fifth got the Oles on the board, and they added one run later in the inning. St. Olaf scored once in the sixth, twice in the seventh and once each in the eighth and ninth to slowly pull away.

St. Norbert had 12 hits in the game, with Fisher going 3-for-4. Fuller and Gusick were both 2-for-4, while Yost was 2-for-5. Yost tied Adam Frost's school record for hits in a season with 74 and finished the year hitting .465.

Vater took the loss in relief of Trevin Hillesheim. Vater allowed three hits and two runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Hillesheim worked five innings, allowing eight hits and four runs with two walks and three strikeouts.

DE PERE - St. Norbert College faces a daunting, but not impossible, task ahead of it if it wishes to claim the 2009 Midwest Conference Baseball Championship. The Green Knights must win three games Saturday to win the league title and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.

St. Norbert (22-11) beat Grinnell College in its tournament opener 9-8 before losing to Beloit College 6-3 at Mel Nicks Field. The Green Knights face Monmouth College at 10 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game, with the winner needing to beat Beloit twice to steal the title. Knox College swept three games on the tournament's final day in 2008, beating St. Norbert and twice topping Ripon College, to claim the championship.

Beloit (27-7) led from start to finish, taking a 3-2 lead before putting the game away with three runs in the seventh inning. Beloit led 2-0 before St. Norbert scored in the fourth when Tony Jandron's RBI groundout scored Brett Birkholz. The Buccaneers scored once in the fifth but St. Norbert answered back in the sixth on Jandron's RBI single to scored Jared Yost.

The Buccaneers broke the game open with three in the bottom of the seventh, after a routine double play ball was erred that could have potentially ended the inning. St. Norbert scored once in the ninth on Matt Hannon's RBI groundout, but couldn't get any closer.

Beloit pitchers did not walk a batter in the game and the Bucs' defense did not commit and error until the ninth inning. Mike Kovach picked up the win, allowing eight hits in six innings. Alex Norman got the save with three hitless innings of relief.

Justin Wotachek took the loss for St. Norbert, allowing 10 hits and five walks and 6.1 innings. Yost was 3-for-4 for the Green Knights' only multi-hit game.

Against Grinnell, St. Norbert rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to escape with the first-round win. The teams combined for 28 hits and left 27 total runners on base in a game that lasted 2 hours 54 minutes.

Grinnell led 4-1 after three innings but St. Norbert would scored twice in the fourth and sixth and once in the fifth for a 6-4 lead. Ryan Kehl's RBI double in the second got St. Norbert on the board. Yost's smash to third base got past the Grinnell third baseman for an error to score a run in the fourth, and Jandron's sacrifice fly cut it to 4-3. Birkholz drove in Kehl with a single in the fifth, and Garrick Fisher's two-run single in the sixth gave St. Norbert a brief lead.

Grinnell scored three runs on four hits in the seventh, doing all the damage after two outs with no one on. The Pioneers could have extended their lead, but left the bases loaded. Grinnell added a run in the top of the eighth for an 8-6 lead.

Kehl's RBI groundout scored Cory Fuller in the eighth to make it 8-7, and Ryan Gusick's double to left-center drove in Fisher for an 8-8 game. The Green Knights started the bottom of the ninth when Jared Yost beat out a slow roller to third and Tony Jandron singled to left. Yost and Jandron then had a double steal to move up to second and third with nobody out.
RIPON - St. Norbert's College's long road back ended with a Midwest Conference championship after winning three games in 5 1/2 hours at the Midwest Conference Tournament at Tracy Field.

The Green Knights (17-17) rallied from 4-0 deficits in their first two games and then held on in Game 7 to steal the title. St. Norbert topped Lake Forest College 6-5 in an elimination game, and then swept Ripon College 8-6 and 5-4 to earn its third MWC championship. The Green Knights, who receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, also won MWC titles in 1991 and 2007.

St. Norbert was on the brink of having its season end several times, especially against Lake Forest. The Green Knights scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, getting RBI singles from Kristin Zimmerman and Collette Ullmer - both with one out. St. Norbert began its rally with one run in the third, getting a RBI single from Kayla Krueger. The Foresters made it 5-1 with one in the fourth, but the Green Knights answered with two in their half on a two-run double from Tracy Palmer. St. Norbert pulled to within 5-4 on a solo home run from Ullmer in the sixth.

Zimmerman and Ullmer both finished 3-for-4 against the Foresters, while Palmer and Krueger were both 2-for-4. Jessica Kropp earned the wining relief, allowing eight hits but just one run in 4 2/3 innings.

St. Norbert again fell behind 4-0 in its first matchup of the day against Ripon. Brieanne Oehlke and Zimmerman stroked back-to-back doubles to start the second, and Kropp folloowed two hitters later with a two-run single. The Red Hawks scored one in the fourth but St. Norbert answered right back with an RBI single from Alyssa McGray to pull within 5-4. St. Norbert broke the game open with a four-run fifth. Zimmerman had an RBI single to score Stephanie Ortiz, and Ullmer then hit a three-run home run. Ripon scored once in the seventh and had two runners on but couldn't get the winning run aboard.

Ullmer was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Zimmerman and Oehlke were both 2-for-3 with two runs scored. St. Norbert had 11 hits. Krueger picked up the win in relief, allowing six hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings.

In the decisive seventh game of the double-elimination tournament, St. Norbert got the early jump, taking a 3-0 lead after three innings. Oehlke hit a two-run home run in the second, and Krueger drove in Palmer with a single in the third. Ripon scored once in the fourth, but Ullmer's solo home run in the bottom of the inning made it 4-1. Ripon scored twice in the sixth to cut it to 4-3, but Oehlke hit her ninth home run of the year with a solo shot in the sixth.

The top of the seventh proved tense for St. Norbert, as Ripon mounted a last-ditch rally. Following a flyout to start, Ripon had three baserunners reach on two singles and an error, and an outfield error made it 5-4 with runners on second and third with one out. Zimmerman then cut down the potential tying run at the plate for the second out, and Krueger fielded a comebacker to end the game.

Ullmer homered in each of the three games for St. Norbert, while Oehlke homered in both Ripon games. Oehlke finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Kari Corbeille worked the first 5 1/3 innings and earned her first win of the season, allowing six hits with three runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
