Former National Football League commissioner Paul Tagliabue and sports, media and entertainment mogul Carl Vogel will be the featured speakers at the academic conference "A Mirror of our Culture: Sport and Society in America." This national conference will be hosted by St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Packers May 26-28, 2010.

Tagliabue will speak on Wednesday, May 26, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at the Walter Theatre in the Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts at St. Norbert College. He will address "Sport in American Society."

Vogel will speak during dinner on Thursday, May 27, between 7 and 9 p.m. in the Legends Club Room at Lambeau Field. He will discuss "The Future of American Sports."

Paul Tagliabue is senior of counsel with Covington & Burling LLP in the firm's Washington, D.C., and New York offices and advises clients on strategic matters in the communications and media, technology, and international sectors.

Tagliabue served as NFL Commissioner from 1989 until 2006 and presided over an extended period of labor peace and revenue growth in professional football. During his tenure, the league grew from 28 to 32 teams, secured the largest television contracts in entertainment history, supported the construction of more than 20 NFL team stadiums, and expanded the NFL's global reach.

Tagliabue has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, and has engaged in business, higher education and public policy discussions in China, India, Japan and Europe with representatives of business, government and academia.

In addition to his role at Covington, Tagliabue continues as a business advisor to the NFL and advises multinational companies in other sectors.

Carl Vogel, a 1979 graduate of St. Norbert College, is partner in SCP Worldwide which owns the national hockey league's St. Louis Blues and major league soccer team Real Salt Lake. SCP, led by chairman David Checketts, is also looking into purchasing the St. Louis Rams football team.

Vogel, one of the most experienced executives in the media and telecom business, with more than 25 years of increasing responsibility across the cable television, satellite, telecom and content sectors, joined SCP Worldwide as partner in May, 2009. Vogel's experience ranges from structuring complex financial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, attracting necessary investment capital in both public and private markets to content creation, program network negotiations and cable and satellite network operations. Vogel has close personal relationships with leaders in the media and telecom sectors in North America and has a long track record of success.

Vogel is currently a member of the board of directors of Dish Network Corporation (DISH; NASDAQ) and an advisor to its chairman, chief executive officer and founder. Dish Network is a leader in the multi-channel video business, serving in excess of 13 million customers throughout the United States.

While serving as vice chairman of Dish Network and EchoStar Communications Corporation (from June 2005 to March 2009), Vogel was responsible for all strategic matters, investments, media and advertising sales, corporate development, treasury, programming negotiation and affiliations as well as being a member of the respective company's executive committees. Vogel also held the title of president from February 2006 to February 2008.

This first-of-its-kind partnership between an NFL team and an institution of higher education will bring together academics and business professionals from around the country. The conference will also feature an exhibit area for publishers, a gallery exhibition and a film festival.

Presentation or paper abstracts are due by Nov. 30, 2009, with notification of acceptances by Jan. 31, 2010, following review by the conference steering committee. St. Norbert College will be publishing the proceedings following the conference. Formal conference registration will open on Feb.1, 2010, and close on April 1, 2010. Registration is limited.

The conference will include an exhibit of sports photography and a film festival. The exhibit will be curated, but there will be "Best of Show" awards given. Photographic submissions are due by April 1, 2010.

Sports videos or films can be submitted for the film festival. Film submissions are due March 1, 2010.
Focus on Energy awards St. Norbert College $45,000 for energy saving initiatives

Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide resource for energy efficiency and renewable energy, awarded $45,900 to St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. after it completed several green building initiatives at its new 80,000 square-foot library.

The Miriam B. and James J. Mulva Library serves as the centerpiece and a primary entry point for the St. Norbert College campus. The new library features a variety of gathering places for students and 50 percent more materials storage--creating a modern sanctuary for knowledge. Most importantly, it offers a full range of technological capabilities needed by students in the 21st century, from wireless internet access for laptop users to multimedia-equipped meeting rooms.

Together the energy-saving projects will save more than 332,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 16,000 therms of natural gas annually compared to a conventional building of its size -- saving enough energy to power 50 Wisconsin homes for a year. St. Norbert College will also benefit from saving approximately $44,000 on its energy bills at the new library each year.

The cash incentives from Focus, in partnership with St. Norbert College's utility Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, were used to install major energy savers including:

• Energy recovery ventilators, which use exhaust air from the building to pre-heat or pre-cool the incoming outside air that is used for ventilation.
• NEMA Premium® motors, which reduce electrical demand by up to 18 percent compared to standard motors and generate less heat.
• Variable-frequency drives installed on equipment to further reduce operating costs by providing greater control over the motors.
• A high-efficiency air cooled chiller, which provides chilled water for air-conditioning systems more efficiently than a standard chiller.

"Whenever there is a sustainable or energy efficient option we always try to make that happen," said Lew Pullen, manager of mechanical systems in the department of facilities at St. Norbert College. "It's the right thing to do and Focus has been a true partner in helping us make these projects happen."

The Mulva Library project isn't the first time St. Norbert College worked with Focus on Energy. From upgrading to high-performance windows, boilers and chillers to purchasing ENERGY STAR® food service equipment and compact fluorescent lights, the campus has saved a total of 800,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 99,000 therms of natural gas annually since 2008--saving the college approximately $170,000 on its energy bills each year.

Not only do these measures save the university money, but they are also environmentally friendly. The annual environmental benefits are equivalent to offsetting more than 3,300 barrels of oil from being burned -- eliminating 2.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere.

"St. Norbert College is a great example of an organization that is going above and beyond to save energy with high-performance, energy-efficient equipment," said Ken Williams, Focus on Energy's business programs director. "The college will be able to see the savings on its energy bills for years to come."

Focus on Energy can help businesses and residents across the state identify and evaluate energy saving opportunities, earn financial incentives, provide recommendations, develop energy management plans and arrange technical training opportunities about energy conservation. For more information, call (800) 762-7077 or visit focusonenergy.com.

St. Norbert College has been notified by several individuals from across the U.S. about counterfeit checks received bearing St. Norbert College's name, address and routing number. The checks have been issued for various amounts and signed by fictitious college representatives. These checks are not issued by St. Norbert College.

James Skorczewski, director of campus safety at St. Norbert College, says the fraudulent checks have many similarities to one another. "Almost all of the checks involve items for sale on Craigslist. The scammers contact the seller stating they are interested in the item and will send a check via Fed Ex. The seller receives the package from Fed Ex and finds a check that appears to be from St. Norbert College made out for an amount greater than the selling price of the item." A day or two later, the seller receives another e-mail from the scammers saying there was a mistake on the check. They ask the seller to cash the check and wire the overage back to them. "Of course they tell the seller to keep a couple hundred dollars for their inconvenience," Skorczewski says.

Although the checks look legitimate, they are fake. If a seller falls for the scam, cashes the check and wires the money, they will be out that amount when the check is rejected for being fraudulent.

St. Norbert College is working with the De Pere Police Department and Fed Ex security to put an end to this scam.

Here are some common sense tips from Craigslist.com that will help you side-step would-be scammers:

- Deal locally with folks you can meet in person. (If you follow this one simple rule you will avoid 99 percent of the scam attempts on Craigslist.)
- Never wire funds via Western Union, Moneygram or any other wire service. (Anyone who asks you to do this is a scammer.)
- Fake cashier checks and money orders are common. (Banks will cash them and then hold you responsible when the fake is discovered weeks later.)
- Craigslist is not involved in any transaction.
- Never give out your financial information.
- Avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services. (Know only a scammer will "guarantee" your transaction.)

St. Norbert College has been proactive in taking security measures and has procedures in place to identify and return any potential fraudulent checks. The college has not suffered any losses due to these scams.

If you have any questions about this fraud scam contact Skorczewski at (920) 403-1346 or by e-mail at james.skorczewski@snc.edu.
