St. Norbert College received honorable mention in the iOMe Challenge, an initiative created and supported by a group of concerned businesses and organizations that issued a call to college and university students to write comprehensive plans to ensure a dignified retirement for members of their generation and beyond.

"We were hoping for the best in the Challenge, but were not expecting to place in the top three, let alone beat submissions from Harvard and other high-caliber colleges," said Kevin Steiner, team leader for St. Norbert College.

Hundreds of students and dozens of schools participated in the first-ever event, offering solutions that ranged from providing additional visas to gain more payroll taxes, to privatizing Social Security.

"Perhaps one of the most significant impending conflicts in the U.S. will be the tension between generations" said David Wegge, professor of political science at St. Norbert College. "The iOme Challenge gives young people a chance to express their concern as well as their solutions to a critical issue facing their generation, retiring with dignity."

After extensive review, a blue-ribbon panel of judges announced that the winner of the iOMe Challenge and a cash prize of $20,000 and $1,000 for their faculty advisor is the team from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich. The winning plan, along with a video from the students, is available at: www.iomechallenge.org.

The first runner-up in the competition is the team from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, while the team from St. Norbert College received honorable mention. Both teams received $2,000 and $500 for their faculty advisor. Three schools were named finalists: Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., St. Louis University in St. Louis, Mo., and LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City, N.Y.

The iOMe Challenge entries were judged for originality, content, style, economic soundness, educational value and accessibility to young Americans. The essays and videos were intended to focus on what life will be like in retirement 40 years from now if our current experience and practices remained the same - and potentially - if any changes should be considered in policy and in how our society prepares for retirement. The members of the blue ribbon panel that chose the winners are:

Don Kettl, dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy

James Choi, assistant professor of finance at the Yale School of Management

John List, economics professor at the University of Chicago

Martin Merzer, longtime journalist and president of Martin Merzer Creative

Services

Laura Schwartz, former special assistant to President Clinton, and president of White House Strategies

Aaron Hall, CEO of Borrego Solar Systems

Beverly Inman-Ebel, vice president of Network of Entrepreneurial Women World Wide, and former president of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

The winning Western Michigan University team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Feb. 4, where they will visit with members of Congress to discuss their plan and participate in a reception with special guests. More details about the activities in Washington are available by contacting Jaclyn Day at 202-470-5362, or jaclynday@rational360.com.

The iOMe Challenge, which was founded by PAi, (Plan Administrators Inc.) was created as an exciting and financially rewarding way to engage young people in the development of public policy. The students were asked to suggest changes that would help secure their financial future, start a retirement dialogue across generations and serve as a call to action on Main Street and Capitol Hill.

In addition to PAi, the competition was sponsored by St. Norbert College in Wisconsin -- which helped coordinate a volunteer board that conducted the first round of entry reviews and through a blind process, narrowed the field to six finalists. Additional sponsorship came from Nicolet National Bank, Intellectual Marketing and Piston Manufacturing. The program also received support from the Council of Independent 401(k) Recordkeepers (CIKR), AARP and The American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries (ASPPA).

St. Norbert College has received a $1,000 Target grant, its second in two years, to help support its after-school program at Jefferson Elementary School, a K-5 school in the Green Bay area. Target's contribution will supply books for the children to keep, help transport St. Norbert student tutors to the children, and provide a special event to bring the children to campus.

"We are thrilled that Target is supporting our efforts to tutor and mentor children in our community," said Nancy Mathias, associate director of leadership and service at St. Norbert College. "One of the most significant challenges in our primary education system is ensuring that children can read at appropriate levels, and we hope to help close the achievement gap at Jefferson Elementary School."

"This is a stellar example of how corporate philanthropy can be used to effectively support public schools and area colleges" says Stan Kocos, extended learning coordinator for the Green Bay Area Public School District. "When a community partner such as Target invests in the academic success of children, the entire community wins," he adds.

This grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. "At Target, our local grants are making a difference in the communities we serve," said Laysha Ward, president, community relations, for Target. "We're proud to partner with St. Norbert College as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work."

St. Norbert College students have tutored at Jefferson Elementary School since 2005. This year, freshmen and sophomore tutors will continue this tradition by spending a few afternoons each week mentoring and tutoring students at Jefferson Elementary. Both the St. Norbert College students and the Jefferson students gain a lot from the tutoring experience.

"Our partnership with Jefferson has not only helped most of the participating children significantly increase their reading levels, it has also provided our St. Norbert College students with an opportunity to learn more about themselves, their community and their ability to make a difference," said Mathias.

The tutors are part of the Midwest Campus Compact Citizen-Scholar (M3C) Fellows Program, which is itself supported by a grant from the Corporation for National Community Service and managed by Midwest Campus Compact. In addition to providing essential reading skills, these tutors serve as role models for peers and children alike by demonstrating strong leadership skills and creating positive change in the community.

"The children that the M3C fellows work with benefit from the time spent not only on raising their reading levels and improving upon vocabulary, but they benefit from our reliability and our being a constant mentor in what may be a difficult world," said Kaylyn Krebs, sophomore and M3C fellow intern. "We love to check up on how their day at school was, and they look forward to sharing that with us. The Target grant aids in the continuing mission of childhood literacy at Jefferson, not only by the contributions it makes to the school, but also by providing books for the home and allowing us to meet their families as well."

For more information about the tutoring program and the M3C Fellows program, contact Nancy Mathias at (920) 403-4040 or nancy.mathias@snc.edu.

Catholic Relief Services began turning a Port-au-Prince golf course into one of the first formal camps for the displaced as other staff delivered medical supplies to St. Francois de Sales hospital, getting that heavily damaged facility up and running, among the many relief efforts by CRS in this devastated city.

As CRS works to get more aid into the country--via air, sea and overland from the Dominican Republic--staff are setting up primary medical care facilities and delivering hygiene kits and plastic sheeting, along with limited amounts of food and water, to a number of informal camps that have sprung up around the city.

At the Petionville Club, CRS is working with United Nations officials and the United States military to turn an informal camp that has attracted 20,000 people during the day and up to 50,000 at night into a formal facility for the displaced, registering residents and delivering buckets of food, sanitation items and water to displaced Haitians waiting in long, orderly lines.

"We are grateful to the 82nd Airborne for providing security," said Annemarie Reilly, CRS Vice President for Overseas Operations. "This camp at Petionville will provide thousands of Haitians with the relief they so desperately need."

Other CRS personnel worked to unload a rare site in Port-au-Prince--a ship that docked at the one working berth in the heavily-damaged harbor. It carried 2,100 metric tons of food from the USAID Food for Peace program. Getting these containers, mainly filled with grain and vegetable oil, off the dock and to warehouses along the city's devastated roadways is the next challenge.

"It may look to many in the rest of the world that those in need are not receiving any aid, but actually thousands here in Port-au-Prince have gotten help," said Karel Zelenka, CRS Haiti country representative. "It must be understood that an apocalypse occurred in a place where there was hardly any infrastructure before--hence the huge logistical challenges.

"Whatever those challenges, we know that the destruction of this earthquake was so vast that even if thousands have gotten help, many, many more need assistance," he added. "We are all working hard to see that they get it."

CRS, which has worked in Haiti for over 50 years and has a permanent staff of more than 300 there, has committed at least $25 million for relief and recovery. It has received $16.5 million in cash donations and commitments, including $1 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and $225,000 from the New York Yankees baseball team.

On the ground, CRS is working with partners from Caritas, the international Catholic aid network, to coordinate its aid response. The agency is also joining aid groups in working with the United Nations as it becomes functional following the destruction of its headquarters and the death of many of its personnel in the 7.0 magnitude quake.

St. Francois de Sales Hospital was familiar to CRS as it had been used to treat people with HIV by the AIDSRelief consortium, which includes CRS. The hospital was heavily damaged in the earthquake, perhaps 70 percent destroyed. It will need reconstruction, but using buildings that remain intact along with tents, doctors have resumed work using supplies from the Catholic Medical Mission Board and others, which CRS delivered. The first operation was one all too common in Port-au-Prince: an amputation. More operations followed conducted by three medical teams that are now working at St. Francois de Sales: one Haitian, one Italian and one Belgian.

CRS is also setting up primary care centers at sites identified by the Catholic Church. Each will be staffed by a doctor and a nurse. At least three are in Port-au-Prince and one in Leogane, a city to the west that suffered extensive damage. More sites are being identified as CRS reaches out to the AIDSRelief network.

How to Help:

Donate via phone: 1-877-HELP-CRS or text RELIEF to 30644

Donate online at http://www.crs.org

Write a check to:
Catholic Relief Services
P.O. Box 17090
Baltimore, Maryland 21203-7090

Money orders: Make payable to CRS/Haiti

Catholic Relief Services is the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. The agency provides assistance to people in more than 100 countries and territories based on need, regardless of race, nationality or creed.
Lifesaving supplies from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) are reaching desperate survivors in quake-shattered Port-au-Prince, Haiti. CRS is distributing food and water from its warehouses in the Haitian capital and the city of Les Cayes. Additional aid is on its way from CRS' supplies in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

CRS has increased its original funding commitment and is planning an emergency response with an expectation of raising $25 million from its generous supporters. To date, CRS has already received more than $6 million in cash and commitments, including a $1-million disaster response donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a $225,000 gift from the New York Yankees baseball team.

"Our staff on the ground say the needs are beyond belief," says Ken Hackett, President of CRS. "This money will help us go even further to reach people who are suffering."

CRS was able to respond immediately thanks to pre-positioned supplies in its Port-au-Prince warehouse. "We are fortunate to have had water in our warehouse," says Karel Zelenka, Country Representative for CRS Haiti. "We also trucked in family food kits from Les Cayes."

CRS has a staff of 313 on the ground, with more personnel arriving daily. CRS Haiti's headquarters building was damaged but did not collapse. Until its structural integrity is assured, aid workers are working and sleeping outside in tents or cars.

Additional food will arrive soon. "Fifteen hundred metric tons of wheat and oil will arrive in port shortly," says Schuyler Thorup, Regional Director for CRS Latin America. "We will distribute it immediately."

In the neighboring Dominican Republic, CRS is preparing food packages to feed 50,000 people. The packages are five-gallon buckets loaded with juice, sardines, sausage, peanut butter, nuts, granola bars, canned fruit, black beans and saltine crackers. CRS is also readying water storage containers, water purification tablets, hygiene kits, cookware and plastic sheeting in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

CRS has been working in Haiti for 55 years, often responding to disasters such as the hurricanes that hit the country in 2008. The agency has an extensive network of aid partners in the country, including Catholic schools, hospitals and health centers.

"There's been an outpouring of support from Catholics and others of good will in the United States," says CRS Executive Vice President Michael Wiest. "We're so grateful for the generosity of our donors, especially because the massive destruction caused by the quake will require a long-term recovery process."

Catholic Relief Services is readying food and other aid to help families affected by a powerful earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12. CRS has committed an initial $5 million (US) to help survivors of the devastating quake.

"This is a massive disaster," says CRS' Country Representative in Haiti, Karel Zelenka. "We should be prepared for thousands and thousands of dead and injured." In a brief call on Tuesday night before phones went down, Zelenka described clouds of smoke surrounding Port-au-Prince and said, "I've experienced earthquakes before, but I never felt anything like this. This is a major hit. And it was direct."

While the CRS office in Port-au-Prince is undamaged, a building directly across from it collapsed. CRS has approximately 340 staffers in Haiti, of which 120 are in Port-au-Prince. Many staffers slept outside on Tuesday night to avoid building collapses from aftershocks.

CRS has pre-positioned food, water storage containers, bedding and other supplies in warehouses in Haiti and nearby countries. "We have to find out if the warehouses in Haiti are damaged," says Ken Polsky, Regional Representative for CRS Latin America.
