Sociology and Human Services Internships
Internships are among the most important opportunities which a student should pursue, and the internship program at St. Norbert College is constantly expanding. Sociology majors with a Human Services concentration are required to undertake an internship in the human services, and all other majors are encouraged to do a supervised internship which give them hands-on experience in a particular field and help them make contact among those already active there.
Some testimonials...
Amanda interned at the Sexual Assault Center of Family Services and graduated in 2007. She is currently a first year student in University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Master of Social Work Program:
As an advocate at the Sexual Assault Center, Amanda answered the crisis hotline, worked with victims in the hospital, police station and supported them through the court process, if they filed a report.
Amanda served as a case manager for both adult and child victims of sexual abuse. She is also a part of community efforts to raise awareness about sexual assault and was a member of the Take Back the Night planning committee and will work on planning community events in the Sexual Assault Awareness Week which takes place each April.
Reflecting on her internship experience, Amanda said, "My intern experience was so rewarding, and I learned so much. Also, my internship has solidified my faith as a worker in the social work/human services field."
Lauren F. graduated in spring 2006.
She was accepted into the Masters of Social Program at Dominican University. In regards to her internship, Lauren said, "I definitely recommend to do an internship in something you may not think you have an interest in... I DID NOT want to intern at the Sexual Assault Center and I loved it and am hoping to get involved with another center in Chicago!! Thanks Nicole!"
Brianne F. graduated in spring 2007:
"My human service classes and internship have increased my passion for wanting to help others and have also made me confident that I can make a positive change in people's lives. My internship experiences through the human service program have helped guide me into the area of social work that I think I would enjoy most. I have also learned what areas of social work that I would not be as interested in. The human service program has laid a great educational foundation as I prepare to enter graduate school."
