2010 Conference
"A Mirror of Our Culture: Sport and Society in America" provided an opportunity for more than 250 sports academics and professionals working in sports-related fields to network and share their expertise. Co-sponsored by St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Packers, the academic conference was held both on the St. Norbert College campus and at historic Lambeau Field.
The conference included an exceptional lineup of keynote speakers. Paul Tagliabue, former Commissioner (CEO) of the National Football League, and Carl Vogel, partner in sports media enterprise SCP Worldwide, gave major addresses on sports in America and the future of American sports, respectively.
Dr. Robert Kustra, President of Boise State University, presented "Modern College Athletics: A View from the Top." Kevin B. Blackistone, panelist on ESPN's "Around the Horn" and holder of the Shirley Povich Chair at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, spoke on the subject of race and sports in America.
In addition, dozens of academics and practitioners delivered papers and presentations on a wide range of topics related to American sports. More than 50 seminars were held concurrently during the first and third day of the event and almost six hours of roundtable discussions were held the second day. Topics were wide ranging covering race and gender; the economics psychology and sociology of sports; ethics; youth sports; and more.
The conference also included a gallery exhibition of the finest American sports photography, and a juried festival of sports-themed films and videos.
