The Role of Athletics in the University

This panel will consist of three presentations. Dr. John Doody will introduce the topic and moderate the panel. Professor Regan will address the role of Athletics from the perspective of a Division One School, Villanova University, highly successful in Basketball. Vice Provost Desjardins will present the experience at a smaller Division Three School, St. John’s and St. Ben’s.
The issues to be addressed will include, the viability of the notion of the “student athlete”, the role of Athletics in marketing a College or University to the wider public, the appearance of increasing scandals and sanctions within College Athletics and the role the NCAA plays in the increasing power of Big time College Athletics.
