The Place of Religion and Prayer in Sport

The combining of religion and sport is not new, but recent events have brought the connection into bolder relief. Few examples are more prominent than those associated with the collegiate and professional successes of Tim Tebow. Mr. Tebow’s unabashed Christianity, and its being reflected in public displays like “tebowing”, have prompted widespread discussion as to whether and to what degree one’s faith should be integrated into one’s professional, and very public, sporting career. Here, I address the appropriateness of such religiosity in sport. I focus in particular on athletes’ invoking of God as a means or explanation of their sporting success, and I defend the idea that such invocations should me minimized, if not discouraged altogether.
