The student must be able to attend the February 20, 2008 WiCC/DPI Service-Learning Institute at the Brookfield Sheraton in Brookfield, WI, should they be selected for the award. The award will include registration fees for the Institute for the Student Award winner. Students must show an innovative approach to building or enhancing campus-based efforts to address community issues and needs, use of diverse strategies of engagement, and ability to lead, inspire, and engage other students and/or members of the institution. |

Awarded to exceptional students who have shown potential for civic leadership through community service and scholastic achievement. The student must also demonstrate financial need. The President must come up with a mentoring plan for the student. The Mentoring Plan is a pledge that the president will provide mentoring and leadership development for the winning student for the following academic year and describes how this will occur. The Plan should describe regular contact between the president and student, ongoing support for the student from an appropriate staff member (i.e. community service director or faculty) and discuss specific opportunities for the student. Two $5,000 awards are available to undergraduate students at Campus Compact member colleges and universities. |

Five students at Campus Compact member schools are honored each year with this prestigious award. The award recognizes students for their innovative strategies in addressing community issues and needs, and their efforts to build and sustain this work among their peers and within their institution. The award is named in honor of the late Howard R. Swearer, 15th president of Brown University and a founder of Campus Compact. These $1,500 awards support service programs designed or chosen by the recipients. Each Campus Compact member president can nominate one student for the award. $1,500 for each student: a $250 donation to a service program/organization the student has been involved with and a $1,250 award for student's use in professional development (for example, travel to and accommodation at conferences). |
