Interstudy | South Africa
Program Locations
Program Basics
St. Norbert College partners with Interstudy to offer students nine different study abroad opportunities in South Africa. All South African universities utilize the semester system, with Semester I running from February through June, and Semester II beginning in July and finishing in November. The aforementioned universities cater to a variety of students, offering both small and large campuses, diverse curriculum options, and a wide choice of geographical settings.
Academics
SNC students take the same classes as host country students and have a wide range of academic choices. Visit the links for each university above to see which courses are offered at each particular institution (scroll to the bottom of each link and look for "Subject Areas"). Please keep in mind that Semester I = Spring and Semester II = Fall. The nine universities in South Africa cater to students in the following fields:
- Business & Commerce: Accounting, Business, Economics, Finance, Financial Accounting, Human Resource Management, and Management
- Education: Early Childhood Studies, Education Studies, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Management & Policy
- Health Sciences: Anatomy, Human Biology, Human Physiology, and Immunology
- Humanities & Social Sciences: African Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Communication, Conflict Resolution & Peace Studies, Criminology, Development Studies, English, Geography, History, Humanities, International Relations, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology
- Science & Technology: Biochemistry, Biology, Biophysical Science, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Geology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, and Zoology
While students choose courses and gain pre-approval (of transfer credit) before their departure, the final selection of coursework does not occur until arrival in South Africa.
In addition to traditional coursework, community service and service learning opportunities are available at: Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, Rhodes University, and at both campuses at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Accommodations
Each institution offers different housing options. For the most part, students live either on-campus or near campus with with a mix of Interstudy, host country, and international students.
A meal allowance (equivalent to the SNC meal plan) is transferred into your bank account. Meal money is then distributed in local currency, and students can choose to eat on- or off-campus. There are three exceptions to this meal allowance: Rhodes University, University of the Western Cape, and University of the Witwatersrand. These three institutions require a campus-based meal plan.
