Testimonials
- I attended St. Norbert because of the study abroad program. ... While Europe is lovely, Africa is a place I may never get another opportunity to travel to again. (Ashley, Fall 2010, University of KwaZulu-Natal)
- South Africa is a gorgeous, beautifully diverse
country, and its transformation post-Apartheid is astounding, and it is
still progressing. The breathtaking, exuberant country and its people
truly stole my heart, which I left in Cape Town, South Africa. (Eliza, Spring 2010, University of Cape Town)
Orientation
Provided students arrive on the pre-arranged arrival date, an interstudy staff
member will meet them at the airport and travel with them to the
university.
As part of the interstudy arrival program, students will attend two required
orientation sessions. The first, conducted by interstudy, takes place
over the first several days in-country. The second, conducted by the
host institution itself, takes place shortly thereafter. The interstudy
orientation is designed to assist students in adjusting to cultural
differences, in getting to know their new surroundings, and in
understanding the differences in the educational system. Staff members
will explain how to navigate course registration, review rules and
regulations, and get students acquainted with their accommodations, the
campus, and the local banking, telecommunications, and transportation
systems. The interstudy orientation also covers health and safety
issues on- and off-campus.
Coursework
All South African universities utilize a full and balanced semester
system that is virtually identical to that operating in the United
States. The South African academic year is the reverse of the American
calendar, with
Semester I running from February through June, and Semester II
beginning in July and finishing in November.
The nine universities in South Africa cater to students in nearly every
field: business and commerce, education, health sciences, humanities
and social sciences, and science and technology. SNC students take the same classes as host country students and have a wide range of academic choices. Visit the links for each university above to see which courses are offered at each particular institution (scroll to the bottom of each link and look for "Subject Areas"). Please remember, Semester I = Spring and Semester II = Fall.
While students choose courses and gain pre-approval (of transfer credit) before their departure, the final selection of coursework does not occur until arrival in South Africa.
In addition to traditional coursework, community service and service learning opportunities are available at Stellenbosch University, University of Cape Town, Rhodes University, and at both campuses at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Accommodations
Each institution offers different housing options. For the most part, students live either on-campus or near campus with with a mix of interstudy, host country, and international students. All interstudy students have single rooms (with a few exceptions).
As for meals, an allowance (equivalent to the charge for a St. Norbert meal plan) is transferred into each student's bank account. Meal money is then distributed in local currency, and students can choose to eat on- or off-campus. There are three exceptions to this meal allowance: Rhodes University, University of the Western Cape, and University of the Witwatersrand. These three institutions require a campus-based meal plan.
The student support offered by interstudy, which supplements that of the Study Abroad Office, includes (at no additional cost):
- Academic excursions
- International bank account
- Mobile phone
- Comprehensive international medical insurance
- South Africa Mentor Program

Visa Information
A visa is official permission, granted by the authorities of the
country where you wish to study or visit, which allows you to enter and
remain in that country for a specific purpose and for a designated
period of time. You cannot apply for a student visa until you have
received an acceptance letter from your institution abroad. You are
responsible for applying for the correct visa and paying all necessary
fees.
For students attending a program in South Africa, interstudy sends you
a visa application packet and checklist of necessary documents. Students work with interstudy prior to a set deadline to make sure that everything will
go smoothly with the submission of your visa application to the Consulate. If interstudy receives your application by the set deadlines, they then
submit the application on your behalf and get the visa back to you
promptly.
Please note that visa requirements change frequently. Research your country's requirements or contact your study abroad advisor for the most current information.
