The JAST Program utilizes a rigorous curriculum that leads to increased Japanese language proficiency and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. The program consists of three main components: a seven-week language intensive program (7 credits); six compulsory language and culture courses (11 credits); and two elective courses (3.5 credits).
Intensive Program
Begin your experience at Tsuru University by enrolling in a seven-week intensive Japanese language program. Students take two 90-minute sessions each morning (Monday through Friday). Students are placed into one of three language levels: A (lower), B (middle), or C (upper). During orientation, students take a language assessment to determine their appropriate level. Students receive credit for one Japanese course (JAPN 204, JAPN 305, or JAPN 306) and one Japanese elective (JAPN 393).
Compulsory Language and Culture Courses
Following the intensive language program, the regular academic semester begins at Tsuru. Students enroll in six compulsory courses to develop more familiarity with Japanese language and culture. The courses meet once per week for 90 minutes.
Students continue with the study of Japanese by taking three additional language courses. Students are placed into one of three language levels (III, IV, or V). Depending on your level, you will receive credit for one Japanese course (JAPN 305, JAPN 306, or JAPN 320) and one Japanese elective (JAPN 393).
