Program Overview

  • Study in ancient Florence - the birthplace of the Renaissance
  • All coursework is conducted in English; no previous knowledge of Italian is required
  • Cultural immersion activities and academic excursions are included in the program fee
  • Volunteer opportunities with Florentine social and cultural associations are available

Overview

St. Norbert College partners with Study Abroad Italy (SAI) to offer students the opportunity to study in in Florence, Italy. Florence University of the Arts (FUA) is located in the historic center of Florence, and thus gives students the chance to live in the heart of this bustling Renaissance city while experiencing modern Florentine life. School buildings and student accommodations are within walking distance of such landmarks as the Uffizi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Accademia Museum (site of the David), along with the many other museums and churches in Florence showcasing the most extensive and famous collection of Italian art works found in the world.

Florence lies in a valley on the banks of the Arno River in the Tuscan region of Italy. Nestled among low hills covered with olive groves and vineyards, Florence captivates those who visit. With a population close to 375,000, Florence offers the amenities and culture of a large city, while delighting visitors with the charms of the intimate city center. This historic center of the city is bursting with sights, museums, fine art, shopping, fine foods, and wines. Florence is also well known as an important center of contemporary art, fashion design, graphic design, and business, all of which can be studied at Florence University of the Arts.

Testimonials

  • I learned a lot about photography, painting, design, and even cooking. It was especially rewarding because I learned these things with the Italian view. (Rachel, Spring 2011)
  • The city of Florence is full of culture. There is always something enjoyable going on around the streets of the city. (Rodrigo, Spring 2011)
Academics

Orientation

During the first three days of the program, the SAI on-site program team organizes a series of meetings and events that are designed to provide students with a thorough orientation of Florence and the surrounding area, along with a full explanation of the academic program. During this time, students meet with advisors, and final course registration takes place on-site. Students will also take a guided walking tour of the city and school premises.

Coursework

  • Language: English

As an urban institute, FUA is comprised of several buildings. The school's main building, Palazzo Doni, hosts many courses for digital imaging and the visual arts (DIVA). Palazzo Bambicci Guicciardini Strozzi, located across the street from Palazzo Doni, hosts many of the traditional liberal arts courses. Palazzo Ramirez de Montalvo accommodates the Italian language and Italian literature departments (sQuola). If students have the flexibility to take a food studies course, Villa Brilli Peri houses the school of hospitality (Apicius).

Students typically enroll in five courses at three credits each for a total of 15 credits (view the Fall 2012 schedule). The maximum amount of credits allowed is 16. FUA offers a wide variety of courses to satisfy requirements for many St. Norbert majors and minors, along with the General Education Program (GS10, GS11, GS1U, and several lower biennium requirements).

Courses are taught in English, so no previous knowledge of Italian is necessary. Students are required to take one three-credit Italian language course.

Visa Information

A visa is official permission, granted by the authorities of the country where you wish to study or visit, which allows you to enter and remain in that country for a specific purpose and for a designated period of time. You cannot apply for a student visa until you have received an acceptance letter from your institution abroad. You are responsible for applying for the correct visa and paying all necessary fees.

Italy requires that you have a long-term student visa in order to enter the country. You should familiarize yourself with the visa application process by visiting the web site of the Italian Consulate in Chicago. A visa information session is generally held to inform students about the required documents and the application process.

Please note that visa requirements change frequently. Research your country's requirements or contact your study abroad advisor for the most current information.
