Overview
St. Norbert College partners with Study Abroad Italy (SAI) to offer students the opportunity to study in Rome, Italy, for one semester. John Cabot University (JCU) was founded in 1972 as a four-year college of liberal arts and sciences. Today, JCU is a unique accredited independent university with American roots and a distinctively international character. The central Rome location means that students are literally surrounded by the history and art of thousands of years, from the Vatican and Imperial Forum to the Roman Pantheon.
Rome is the Eternal City, where history and great art come alive on the
streets. Its treasures include the Vatican Palace, with its
masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, the
Pieta, Bernini fountains, the Renaissance architecture of St. Peter’s
Basilica, and archeological sites where ancient cultures are uncovered.
Today, Rome is a vital European center for religion, business, film, art
and fashion, and home to one of the largest university student
populations in the world.
Testimonials
- It was worth it. I have not once regretted the decision. It was the best experience I've ever had in my life. It has changed me as a person and has taught me a lot of things about the world, about people, and about myself. (Nolan, Spring 2011)
- I enjoyed being among students from across the globe in a truly international setting. It was not the facts I learned from the lectures, but the global consciousness I gained from meeting and collaborating with international students that was truly rewarding. (Robby, Spring 2011)
Orientation
During the first three days of the program, the SAI on-site program team organizes a series of meetings and events that are designed
to provide students with a thorough orientation of Rome, along with a full explanation of the academic
program. By the end of the orientation, students will have a good understanding of how to find their classes, buy supplies and groceries, and move about independently in the city.
Coursework
John Cabot University (JCU) maintains two campuses in Rome, each with its own personality. The Frank J. Guarini Campus is a historic building that takes full advantage of Rome's mild climate, opening onto patios, terraces, and a spacious "Lemon Tree" courtyard. In additional to classrooms, the Guarini Campus houses the auditorium, library, and JCU administrative offices. The Tiber Campus, located on the banks of the Tiber River, is a five-minute walk from Guarini. The spacious building houses smart classrooms, a student lounge, and JCU Student Services.
Students typically enroll in five courses at three credits each for a total of 15 credits (see the Fall 2012 schedule). The maximum amount of credits allowed is 17. JCU offers a wide variety of courses to satisfy requirements for many St. Norbert majors and minors, along with the General Education Program (GS10, GS11, GS1U, and several lower biennium requirements).
Courses are taught in English, so no previous knowledge of Italian is necessary. And while an Italian language course is not required, it is strongly recommended.
For-credit and non-credit internship opportunities are also available. JCU maintains relationships with leading multinational corporations, embassies, media outlets, and international organizations. Interested students must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA and junior or senior standing. Students should contact the Study Abroad Office and SAI during the application process, explaining the type of internship they are interested in. Volunteer opportunities are also available.
Accommodations
Students will be provided with safe, well-maintained, student-level housing in apartments.
For the most part, students are placed with other U.S. students in
apartments that are privately owned by Italian residents. A typical
apartment will house 2 to 8 students, and contains double bedrooms and a
shared kitchen, bedroom, and living area.
St. Norbert College partners with Study Abroad Italy (SAI), meaning students have additional support services during their study abroad experience. Some of these services, which supplement the support provided by the Study Abroad Office, include:
- Pre-departure preparation
- Use of a mobile phone (incoming calls and text messages are free)
- Airport pick-up and transportation on arrival days
- Arrival orientation, welcome reception, and farewell reception
- Weekly cultural events, excursions, volunteer, and service opportunities
Calendar
- Fall 2012: August 28 - December 15, 2012
- Spring 2013: January 8 - May 4, 2013

Visa Information
A visa is official permission, granted by the authorities of the
country where you wish to study or visit, which allows you to enter and
remain in that country for a specific purpose and for a designated
period of time. You cannot apply for a student visa until you have
received an acceptance letter from your institution abroad. You are
responsible for applying for the correct visa and paying all necessary
fees.
Italy requires that you have a long-term student visa
in order to enter the country. You should familiarize yourself with the visa application process by visiting the web site of the Italian Consulate in Chicago.
Long-term student visas can be processed by the St. Norbert College
Study Abroad. A visa information session is generally held to inform
students about the required documents.
Please note that visa requirements change frequently. Research your country's requirements or contact your study abroad advisor for the most current information.
