Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Beer Sheva, Israel)
Program Basics
Students take the road less traveled with a unique study abroad program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU). BGU is located in Beer Sheva, Israel's fourth largest city, situated in the Negev desert.
Academics
Through the Overseas Student Program (OSP), students study the Hebrew language, choose from a variety of courses taught in English, and are highly encouraged to complete internships and/or volunteer. For the most part, students choose from courses specifically designed for the OSP, as BGU's academic calendar does not coincide with that of the OSP.
Alternatively, students may choose from three specialized tracks of study:
- Program for Global Health
- Program for Peace Studies and Regional Security
- Sustainable Development and Environmental Justice
All students are required to take the Ulpan, which is an six-week intensive and immersive Hebrew class taken before the beginning of the semester. The Ulpan incorporates a traditional curriculum of reading, writing, and conversation, in addition to cultural topics such as Israeli music, movies, radios, and excursions.
Additionally, the Center for International Student Programs offers students a wide variety of extracurricular activities designed to enhance their academic experience in Israel.
Accommodations
Students live in the BGU student dormitories, which are a quick two-minute walk to campus. SNC students live with other BGU students, providing the opportunity to foster relationships with Israelis. The rooms are furnished with a bed, desk/table, bookshelf, wardrobe/closet, and a chair. The dormitory complex features a mini-market, laundry facilities, 24-hour computer labs with Internet access, a unisex hairdresser, cafe, music room, and student lounges.
Additionally, students are encouraged to enjoy the experience of having an "adopted" family. The experience allows students to become more immersed in the culture, in addition to exploring issues that Israelis face today. During the arrival orientation in Israel, students should alert the staff that they would like an adopted family.
