October 24, 2008 Discontinuing old e-mail addresses As many of you may remember, several years ago SNC e-mail addresses had the format loginid@mail.snc.edu, and they were later changed to the current format of firstname.lastname@snc.edu. If you've been at the College that long, you may be aware that e-mail sent to your old e-mail address is still being processed. When we convert to our new Zimbra e-mail server in February, our servers will stop accepting mail sent to addresses using 6-character login IDs, loginid@mail.snc.edu and loginid@snc.edu, as well as any addresses ending with mail.snc.edu, including firstname.lastname@mail.snc.edu. From that point forward, only mail sent to your official firstname.lastname@snc.edu address will be received. Many of these old addresses have become targets for spam, so this change should reduce the amount of spam received by the College as a whole. Many of you probably did not even realize that we were still servicing these old addresses and you will not be affected by this change. However, if you are still subscribed to e-mail discussion lists (listservs) under one of your old addresses, you will no longer receive mail from those lists and will need to re-subscribe to them using your current address. If you need assistance in doing that, please save one of the messages from that list before we make this change, which should contain the information you need to re-subscribe. If you have correspondents who are still using any of your old addresses to send you mail, they will need to update their address books and begin using your current address. Also, please make sure that your e-mail signature contains your correct e-mail address, and the next time you order business cards, make sure that your e-mail address is correct there as well.
