Get ready for Zimbra!

SNC Faculty and Staff:

Get ready for Zimbra! You can convert now and begin taking advantage of the new e-mail and calendar system!

The College is currently implementing the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, a new system that combines e-mail, calendars, address books, and other tools in an integrated system. Zimbra will replace our current e-mail server on February 16, 2009. The old e-mail server will remain available as an archive until May 2009, so you will have plenty of time to refer back to it and copy or convert anything you need.

Calendars

In addition to being able to keep your own personal calendars in Zimbra, there are class calendars that are automatically generated for students and instructors, which you'll soon see under a "My Classes" heading. Note that those calendars are updated and refreshed every night. There are also a series of College-wide event calendars under development, which you'll see under an "SNC Calendars" heading. We do not recommend deleting or renaming these calendars, as they will be re-added when they are updated overnight. You can change the color if desired, and that will not be reset at night. If you do not want to display these calendars, just uncheck them. Note that the SNC calendars are still under development and will evolve over the next several months.

Converting e-mail to Zimbra

You can convert to Zimbra any time between now and February 16. If you do not convert before then, a Zimbra account will automatically be created for you on February 16, but your e-mail messages and folders will not be automatically moved from the old mail server to the Zimbra server. If you have mail stored on the old server that you want moved to Zimbra, you must request that it be converted. To do so, go to the Zimbra conversion request form at http://www.snc.edu/newzimbra, log in with your 6-character login ID and password, type your password where requested at the bottom of the page, and submit the form.

Logging in to Zimbra

To log in to Zimbra, just go to http://www.snc.edu/zimbra.

Important! You must log in to Zimbra using your firstname.lastname from the beginning of your e-mail address in the "Username" box, rather than your 6-character login ID. Your 6-character login ID will still be used to log in to the campus network and College web pages; your firstname.lastname will be used only for Zimbra.

Your specific method for accessing Zimbra will depend upon how you use your SNC e-mail account:

If you access your SNC e-mail through WebMail

Zimbra has a web-based e-mail application that will replace WebMail. Once you've converted your e-mail, simply log into Zimbra and use it for e-mail. If you have a personal address book stored in WebMail, you'll need to enter those addresses into Zimbra manually (WebMail does not have a way to export them). Learn how to use Zimbra e-mail in our Zimbra basics handout:
http://www.snc.edu/techsupport/handouts/E-mail_+_Discussion_Lists/Zimbra_Basics.pdf

If you access your SNC e-mail through an e-mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook

You can continue to use the same program. Once you've converted to Zimbra, you'll need to change your e-mail program's settings so that it connects to the Zimbra server instead of to the old mail server. The necessary server details can be found on the Zimbra Server Information page at http://www.snc.edu/techsupport/docs/zimbraserver.html. If you have mail on the old server that you want moved to Zimbra, you'll need to request that as described above.

If you have your SNC e-mail forwarded to another e-mail account/address

E-mail forwarding will not be carried over from the old mail system to Zimbra. If you have your SNC e-mail forwarded to another address, you will need to log in to Zimbra to reset it. To do so, once you've converted to Zimbra, log into Zimbra, go to Preferences – Mail, and under "Forward a copy to," enter your forwarding address in the box. Check the "Don't keep a local copy of messages" box, then click the Save button on the menu bar in the upper left.
