March 19, 2009 Please do not respond to Zimbra account query Members of the St. Norbert College Community: On an increasingly frequent basis we encounter e-mail "phishing" scams. We've just seen another that's going around. While we hate to load up your inbox with warnings, please DO NOT RESPOND to this query! When someone responds, their email account is taken over and used for spam, and St. Norbert College e-mail is then blocked by a number of sites. "Phishing" is an attempt to acquire login, financial, or other personal information by sending e-mail that appears to come from a reputable source. It may result in identity theft or unauthorized use of e-mail accounts. In this case, the message has the subject: "Dear Email account ownner" and the message comes from "Zimbra/SNC. Tehcnical Team" . The message asks for First Name, email, User Name, and Password and threatens to terminate the account if the recipient does not reply. There may be variations in the wording of the subject or the from address. This did NOT come from St. Norbert College. We never solicit personal information in this way. Please do NOT respond to this query if you receive it. If you received this query and DID reply, please change your password IMMEDIATELY and contact our Help Desk. As a general rule, you should never be asked for personal or financial information via e-mail, and you should never respond to a request that asks that you do so. Also, never provide personal information via a web site unless you are very sure it is legitimate and secure. Be aware that when your SNC password expires (every 180 days), you will receive instructions on how to reset it. That is a legitimate communication that does not ask you to send your information via e-mail. Rather, you are instructed on how to update your password yourself via a secure web process. If you have questions about this or if you are ever unsure about the legitimacy of an e-mail query, please call the College's Technology Support Help Desk at xHELP/4357 or send e-mail to helpdesk@snc.edu . -- Information Technology -- it@snc.edu http://www.snc.edu/it/ 920-403-3873 (phone) 920-403-HELP/4357 (Help Desk) 920-403-4084 (fax) If you have any questions, please call the Tech.
