Off-campus E-mail Delivery Issues

The following message was delivered on May 22. You may have already seen this message, but it was among those messages that could not be recovered by the Zimbra restoration.
________________________________________________________________

Two weeks ago, a St. Norbert College alum responded to an e-mail phishing message and the account was taken over and used for spam. Since that time, we have been wrestling with blacklistings, where e-mail services view any messages coming from snc.edu as being spam. We are required to submit requests to remove the snc.edu domain from the blacklistings and then wait for the individual services to take action on their end.

At this point, we still have three services that have not responded the way they have in the past, and that is resulting in e-mail messages from snc.edu not being delivered as expected. They are Hotmail, Yahoo mail, and Centurytel. Here is what is happening and what can (and cannot) be done:

Yahoo mail is placing e-mail from snc.edu directly in the spam folder of the addressee. However, if the addressee has created a contact (address book) entry for you with your snc.edu address, any messages from you will be placed directly in the addressee's inbox. So if you are having difficulty getting e-mail to someone with a Yahoo address, ask them (via the phone or some other fashion) to create a contact entry for you.

Hotmail blocked snc.edu messages for a couple of days and is no longer blocking them. Unfortunately, Hotmail is not delivering e-mail from snc.edu and there is no indication as to why. The communication between our mail server and theirs indicates that the messages are being accepted for delivery by Hotmail. We have submitted numerous requests to have this corrected and will continue to work on it. In the meantime, the only solution we have is to use a different e-mail service to send messages to anyone with a hotmail.com address.

Centurytel is returning messages indicating that they are refusing to deliver mail. We are working to remove ourselves from that blacklist.

We will continue to work to resolve the e-mail delivery issues with these services and will advise you when this has occurred. If you receive any replies that indicate your messages are being blocked by an e-mail service, please contact the Help Desk (helpdesk@snc.edu, 920-403-4357). We have also acquired and are testing a new antispam server that will restrict outbound messages and attempt to prevent spam blasts originating from snc.edu.

A single bad decision by a single member of the SNC community caused these issues. Please be very conscious of responding to e-mail queries. We have an informational web page dedicated to this:
