July 27, 2009 E-mail blocked E-mail sent from St. Norbert College addresses (snc.edu) is being blocked by Hotmail and probably by other sites as well. Last week, an alumnus responded to a phishing message that asked for his e-mail address and password. His account was taken over on Sunday and used to send out spam. As a consequence, St. Norbert College e-mail addresses are now on at least 2 blacklists and potentially more. We have taken action to prevent this account from being used and are working to remove ourselves from the blacklists. This often takes several days for blacklist organizations to recognize that we are no longer sending out spam. We talked with the alumnus and asked if he had seen our many previous messages saying to never, ever respond to these queries. He said yes, but he did not see a message about this particular one. We cannot send out warnings about every phishing message - they come out nearly every day. The simple statement that we make is: you never need to wonder whether these messages are legitimate. They're not. Ever. We never ask for personal information via e-mail. Particularly if you are asked to send your password via e-mail, the answer is: just don't do it! A single bad decision by a single member of the SNC community has resulted in problems for the entire College. Please be very conscious of responding to e-mail queries. When in doubt, please call our Help Desk before responding.
