August 26, 2011 Classroom and lab computer changes Dear instructors, As you prepare to start your classes next week, we wanted to make you aware of a few things about the new computer setup in the classrooms and computer labs: - Windows computers in labs and classrooms now have the Citrix "virtual application" environment with Windows 7 and Office 2011. Shortcuts for some common programs are on the desktop, and all of the other programs are available under Start (the round button in the lower left) -> All Programs. - Each time you log in, the first program you open will take several seconds to start up. Subsequent programs will start faster. - You can no longer save files on the computers' hard drives, even temporarily, and there are no longer "Save Here" folders. Files must be saved to your M drive or flash drive. The computers' "Documents" folders have been redirected to the M drive, and many programs will save files there by default. - Most changes that you make to program settings will be saved in your Citrix profile, so those same settings will be available on any lab or classroom computer you use. - For security reasons, DVDs do not start automatically when inserted into the computer. To play a DVD, you must start Windows Media Player, which is available on the desktop, in the taskbar, and on the Start -> All Programs menu. If the DVD volume is too low, adjust it using the volume controls within Windows Media Player. - You can only be logged into Citrix on one computer at a time. If you log in to a second Citrix computer, it will end your session on the first computer. - In classrooms with StarBoards, the default StarBoard menus have changed. Fewer tools are displayed initially, but when you click on a StarBoard tool, the menu expands to show additional tools. As always, if you have any questions or notice any problems in the classrooms or labs, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@snc.edu or xHELP (4357). Have a great semester! If you have any questions, please call the Tech. Support Help Desk at xHELP (4357). |
