E-mail programs

WebMail: The College's web-based e-mail program, at http://www.snc.edu/webmail, allows you to access your e-mail account from any computer with an Internet connection and a web browser, with no special configuration. With WebMail, your e-mail and folders are stored on the mail server, so you can access them from any computer on the Internet. Instructions for using WebMail are in the handout WebMail Basics.

Thunderbird: The College supports and strongly recommends the free Thunderbird e-mail program. This program must be installed on each computer on which you wish to use it. Thunderbird also stores your e-mail and folders on the mail server, so you can still access them from any computer on the Internet via WebMail (e.g., when traveling). Instructions for Thunderbird can be found in the handouts Installing & Configuring Thunderbird for SNC E-Mail and Thunderbird E-Mail Basics.

Other programs: No other e-mail programs are supported at this time, but if you choose to use one, the information you will need to configure it is in the handout Accessing Your SNC E-Mail.

E-mail policies

E-mail is considered an official method of communication at St. Norbert College. Employees and students are expected to check their St. Norbert College e-mail on a frequent and consistent basis in order to remain informed of College-related communications. Individuals are responsible for the consequences of not reading College-related communications sent to their official St. Norbert College e-mail account in a timely fashion. For details, see:

Quotas

In order to manage our network resources, each user has a quota on the amount of e-mail that can be stored. The current quota is 100MB (megabytes) per user. Employees and students are expected to maintain their e-mail accounts responsibly so as to remain within these quotas. For details, see Managing your e-mail: How to avoid going over quota.

Spam

The College operates an anti-spam server to reduce the amount of spam (junk e-mail) received by SNC e-mail users. The name of the product we use is the "Barracuda Spam Firewall." Note that this system will reduce the amount of spam you receive, but no system can block 100% of all spam. For more information, see Spam and Barracuda Anti-spam server

Department/organization e-mail addresses

Each College department or organization has an e-mail address which is used as a primary departmental contact, e.g., library@snc.edu or dining@snc.edu. These addresses are used on web sites, as well as on letterhead and other materials. These addresses are forwarded to one or more people in the department or organization. To request a new departmental address or change the forwarding on an existing one, please use the Service Request form. Be sure to specify what the address is/should be and the College e-mail address to which it should be forwarded.

Sending e-mail from the Res. Halls (students)

For security reasons, non-secure outgoing e-mail traffic is blocked from St. Norbert College Residence Hall rooms. This protects everyone by preventing virus-infected computers from spreading viruses to others, and prevents computers infected with spambots/spam trojans (spyware that uses the computer to send spam) from sending spam. If you use web-based e-mail services only, such as WebMail, HotMail, Yahoo, or Gmail, this does not affect you - your outgoing mail will be sent normally through those services. If you use a non-web-based e-mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook in your room, you must configure it to use the College's secure relay server for your outgoing mail. For Thunderbird instructions, see Installing & Configuring Thunderbird for SNC E-Mail. For all other e-mail programs, see  Accessing Your SNC E-Mail.

Note: Students no longer need to apply for an exception to send outgoing e-mail.
