E-mail programs
Zimbra: The Zimbra Collaboration Suite is the College's e-mail and calendar system, which combines e-mail, calendars, address books, and other tools in an integrated system. For more information and links to instructions, see the
Zimbra page. To log in to Zimbra, go to
http://www.snc.edu/zimbra.
Thunderbird: The free Thunderbird e-mail program is also supported. This program must be installed on each computer on which you wish to use it. Thunderbird can be used interchangeably with the Zimbra web interface (e.g., you can use Thunderbird on your office computer and use the Zimbra web interface when at home or traveling). Instructions for Thunderbird can be found in the handouts
Installing & Configuring Thunderbird for SNC E-Mail and
Thunderbird E-Mail Basics.
Other programs: No other e-mail programs are supported at this time, but if you choose to use one, the information you will need to configure it properly can be found on the
Zimbra Server Information page.
E-mail policies
E-mail is considered an official method of communication at St. Norbert College. Employees and students are expected to check their St. Norbert College e-mail on a frequent and consistent basis in order to remain informed of College-related communications. Individuals are responsible for the consequences of not reading College-related communications sent to their official St. Norbert College e-mail account in a timely fashion. For details, see:
Quotas
In order to manage our network resources, each user has a quota on the amount of e-mail that can be stored. The current Zimbra quota is 300MB (megabytes) per user. Employees and students are expected to maintain their e-mail accounts responsibly so as to remain within these quotas. For details, see
Managing your e-mail: How to avoid going over quota.
Spam (junk e-mail)
The College operates an anti-spam server to reduce the amount of spam (junk e-mail) received by SNC e-mail users. The name of the product we use is the "Barracuda Spam Firewall." Note that this system will reduce the amount of spam you receive, but no system can block 100% of all spam. For more information, see
Spam and
Barracuda Anti-spam server.
Phishing (e-mail scams)
"Phishing" refers to e-mail messages designed to get you to reveal your personal information so they can access your accounts and steal your identity. For more information about phishing attacks and how to avoid getting caught, see our
Phishing page.
Mailing lists
St. Norbert College operates many e-mail lists. Some of these lists are automated, that is, created on the basis of a defined group, such as those registered for a particular course, those with access to a campus system, etc., while others are voluntary. For more information, see the
Mailing Lists page.
Department/organization e-mail addresses
Each College department or organization has an e-mail address which is used as a primary departmental contact, e.g., library@snc.edu or dining@snc.edu. These addresses are used on web sites, as well as on letterhead and other materials. Mail sent to these addresses goes into a folder in Zimbra that is shared with one or more people in the department or organization. If you are the recipient of one of these addresses, you will have a folder named
department@snc.edu in your list of Zimbra e-mail folders.
The person with whom the folder is initially shared can share it with others by right-clicking on it and choosing Share Folder. More information about sharing folders can be found in the
Zimbra Basics handout.
If you use Thunderbird or Outlook to read your Zimbra e-mail, you may not see your departmental folder until you subscribe to it. See
these instructions for details.
To request a new departmental address, please use the "
Dept/Group E-mail Request" link on
mySNC.
For more information, see our
other e-mail & discussion list handouts.
