Mailing Lists

St. Norbert College operates many e-mail lists. Some of these lists are automated, that is, created on the basis of a defined group, such as those registered for a particular course, those with access to a campus system, etc., while others are voluntary. The system used to manage these lists is called Mailman.

Voluntary lists

There are many voluntary discussion lists which you may be subscribed to based on your interests. Many of these are related to membership in a campus organization, but others are general interest, such as the classifieds list for posting classified advertisements. To see a list of the lists that allow open subscription, visit the Mailman page, http://www.snc.edu/lists.

Subscribing

Not all discussion lists allow open subscription; this is the decision of the list administrator. To subscribe to a list that allows open subscription (if it allows open subscription, it will be listed on the Mailman page):

Via e-mail

Send a blank e-mail message to listname-join@lists.snc.edu, where "listname" is replaced by the name of the list.

Via the web

Go to http://www.snc.edu/lists.
Click on the name of the list.
In the "Subscribing to ..." section, fill in your name and e-mail address and choose a password. Discussion list passwords are not considered secure, so do not use the same password you use for e-mail, KnightLine, Banner, or any other system.
Click the Subscribe button.

Depending upon how the list is configured, you may receive a confirmation message, which you would need to act on, and/or a "welcome" message, which you should save.

Unsubscribing

To unsubscribe from a voluntary discussion list:

Via e-mail

Send a blank e-mail message to listname-leave@lists.snc.edu, where "listname" is replaced by the name of the list. Be sure to include the "-leave" after the list name, or your message will go to the entire list!

Via the web

Go to http://www.snc.edu/lists.
Click on the name of the list.
Scroll down to where it says "To unsubscribe from <listname>, get a password reminder, or change your subscription options enter your subscription email address:," enter your e-mail address, and click the Unsubscribe or edit options button.
Click the Unsubscribe button.
Check you e-mail for the confirmation message.
Follow the instructions in that message to confirm that you want to unsubscribe. (You can either click a link in the message or reply to the message.)

Depending upon how the list is configured, you may receive a confirmation message, which you would need to act on, and/or a "goodbye" message.

Involuntary/automated lists

In involuntary lists, members are subscribed automatically on the basis of membership in a defined group, such as all sophomores, or all those registered for a particular course, or everyone with access to a particular campus system such as Cascade Server. Note that you cannot subscribe to or unsubscribe from these lists. See below for subscribe/unsubscribe details for the various types of lists.

Broadcast lists

There are many mailing lists on campus that are referred to as "broadcast" lists, which means that only a limited number of people on campus can send to them. These are lists such as all faculty, all staff, all students, etc., and are used primarily to send announcements. To send a message to these lists, you must go through your VP's office for approval. If that person is not a broadcaster, they will forward the message to someone who is.

Course lists

Each section of each St. Norbert College course has its own mailing list consisting of all students registered for that section and the instructor(s). Students are automatically added to the list if they add the course and removed from the list if they drop the course. For details, see the handout Automated Course Lists.

Other involuntary lists

cmsusers	List of all those with access to Cascade Server; used to send announcements about Cascade.	Open discussion list - anyone on the list may post.	When a person is given access to Cascade, they are added to the list. When a person's Cascade access is removed, they are removed from the list. To be removed from this list, contact the person who gave you Cascade access and ask them to remove it. For details, see the Web Development site.
advisee lists	All advisors have automatically-generated lists if their advisees, e.g., donald-duck-acad-advisees@lists.snc.edu.	Only advisors may post. Must use Broadcast E-mail Form via mySNC.	Subscription is automatic based on advisor assignments. Cannot unsubscribe.
major/minor lists	Lists of all students who have declared a given academic major or minor, e.g., biology-major@lists.snc.edu, english-minor@lists.snc.edu.	Access to send to major/minor lists is granted upon request. Must use Broadcast E-mail Form via mySNC.	Subscription is automatic based on declaration of major/minor. Cannot unsubscribe.
