Using PDAs/smart phones with Zimbra

Zimbra mobile web interface

Any device with the ability to connect to the Internet (either via a wi-fi connection or a cellular data package) can be used to log in to the Zimbra web interface, which provides access to Zimbra’s e-mail and calendar functions. Some mobile devices will automatically load the mobile version of the web interface, but if yours doesn't, you can go to https://zimbra.snc.edu/zimbra/m/.

For PDAs without Internet access, the only way to connect to Zimbra is to synchronize the PDA with Microsoft Outlook and then synchronize Microsoft Outlook with Zimbra using the Zimbra Outlook Connector ( installation instructions).

PDA operating systems

The biggest factor to consider when looking to purchase a PDA or smart phone for use with Zimbra is the device’s operating system. Windows Mobile, Palm, and Apple devices can be made to interface with the Zimbra system, but Windows Mobile and Apple generally work better than Palm.

Windows Mobile

Windows Mobile devices will allow you to have full functionality with all of your e-mail folders. If you want to use the device’s built-in/native e-mail and calendar applications with Zimbra, then Windows Mobile version 5 or 6 performs the best.

An example of Windows Mobile devices which has been used successfully with Zimbra is the HP iPaq 200 series.

Apple

The native e-mail, calendar, and contact applications on the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch can be synced with Zimbra, and if the devices have Internet access, they can also use the Zimbra mobile web interface. This works either by WiFi or the AT&T EDGE network. For setup instructions, see Zimbra iPhone Configuration (PDF).

Palm

Palm-based devices running VersaMail 3.5 or higher will work with Zimbra, but the built in e-mail application will only allow you to see your Inbox, not any of your other folders. There are also third-party software packages that can be purchased (e.g., SnapperMail Enterprise) that will allow you to see all of your e-mail folders. Palm devices generally have more problems connecting to Zimbra than Windows Mobile or Apple devices. If you plan to purchase a Palm device, talk to the Tech Support department first.

Examples of Palm devices which have been used successfully with Zimbra include the Palm Treo 650, 755p, and Centro.

Warning: Using any version of VersaMail older than 3.5 may result in data loss.

Blackberry

The native e-mail, calendar, and contact applications on Blackberry devices cannot be synchronized or connected to Zimbra in any way, but since the devices have Internet access, they can use the Zimbra mobile web interface.

Testing/Refunds

Most mobile phone carriers have a refund policy allowing you to return your phone if you are not happy with it. We strongly recommend using a carrier that gives you this option so that you can test your new device with Zimbra while it can still be returned, in case you are not happy with the way it works with Zimbra. If you need assistance from Technology Support Services, be sure to contact us as soon as possible within the return period.
