Creating Web Pages

There's more to creating a web site than just writing up some pages and transferring them to the web server. If you haven't already reviewed the section Planning and Designing Web Pages, please do so before proceeding.

Note: These instructions pertain only to creating Faculty Professional Pages. All other SNC department/organization web sites are being maintained using Cascade Server, the College's content management system (CMS).

Use good file names & proper links

It's important to understand how naming and organizing web files affects the way they interconnect with one another. For information on creating links, recommendations for naming and organizing files, and explanations of absolute and relative URLs, see URLs, links, & file names. Remember that your home page should always be named index.htm or index.html.

Consider creating your own templates

If you will be generating many similar pages for your site, you can save time and maintain a consistent look by creating your own template. A template is simply a web page that contains all of the elements that will be repeated on all of your pages, with blank spaces or placeholder text (e.g., "insert title here") for the content that will change on each page.

Create your web pages with...

Compose and format your pages using your web editing program. For pages that are not maintained in Cascade Server, we support WebEdit (Windows only, available from Start - Network Software - Web Development) or a plain text editor such as NotePad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac). You will need to know some HTML codes to use these programs. Refer to the HTML Codes chart for help with the codes. You may use other web editing programs if you have them, but please understand that the Technology Support Services staff will not be able to support those programs. In addition, most Mac computers in campus computer labs have Adobe Dreamweaver for use by particular courses, but  this program is not supported by Technology Support Services. We do not recommend using Microsoft Word, Publisher, or FrontPage to create and edit web pages, as they tend to write code that is specific to Microsoft products and not compatible with all web browsers.

Preview your pages

After creating your web pages, you should preview them on your computer before transferring them to the web server. (After transferring them to the web server, you'll need to test them one final time.)
