Web Standards & GuidelinesPage layout/designThe design template for the College web site is standardized in order to maintain a consistent look across the entire College web site. Other colors, fonts, etc. are not to be used. For custom table layouts, help with photos, or any other design issues, please contact the Office of Communications at x4011. The content portion of the web site (the area you can edit in Cascade Server, below the header and to the right of the navigation menu) should not exceed 500 pixels in width. Organizing files/foldersIt is recommended to use subfolders to organize your files in Cascade. To create a new folder, copy the generic "subfolder" in your department folder. This will ensure that the proper navigation appears on the pages in your subfolder. If you don't see a folder called "subfolder," contact the Web Team. Note that the folder called "subfolder" should not be published. Put all image files in your “images” folder. If you don't see a folder called "images," contact the Web Team. If you have more than a few images, you can create subfolders inside of the “images” folder to better organize your image files. Create the necessary subfolders before uploading the images. There are some other folder names that are used for special purposes. For a list, see the Naming web files and folders page. Departmental contact informationDepartmental contact information appears at the bottom of each College web page created with Cascade Server. The contact e-mail address for the department must be a St. Norbert College departmental e-mail address. Personal e-mail addresses and non-SNC e-mail addresses are not allowed. If you don’t have a departmental e-mail address, contact the Help Desk to request one. LinksWhen creating links in Cascade Server, do not change the “Target,” “Title,” or “Class” boxes. Broken linksBroken link reports are generated every weekday and sent to the departmental e-mail address. These are very important and should be forwarded to the department's web manager so they can be fixed as soon as possible. Broken links convey a very poor impression to our web site visitors. All campus web developers are responsible for making sure that their sites do not have broken links. For the current broken link reports, go to mySNC and look under "Web Site" on the main menu. For tips on fixing broken links, see Fixing Broken Links. If you have any questions about your broken links or need help fixing them, just reply to the broken links report e-mail that you receive and a member of the web team will assist you. |
