Summer Session
During the summer, students live on campus at St. Norbert College for the first five weeks of the program and they spend the last week visiting and learning about another city.
Academics
Students attend morning classes that include: English, Spanish, math and science. Each class is 50 minutes long and is facilitated by a certified teacher from a local high school. Students also take 2 elective classes in the afternoon that are 90 minutes long. They have the opportunity to choose classes ranging from art to astronomy, music to study skills, and beyond as electives. These classes are taught by teachers who are specialized and/or certified in that area.
Supervision and Safety
Students go home every Friday and return Sunday evenings. We hire 6-7 tutor/counselors (TC) that live in the dorm with students 24 hours a day. Campus security are also on duty 24 hours a day.
Academic Enrichment
TC's attend all the morning and afternoon classes where they can provide tutoring to students during and after class. Students have scheduled supervised study Sunday through Thursday in which they do homework, study, write papers, do research and receive additional assistance from TC's, instructors and staff.
Cultural and Educational Activities
During the summer, we develop activities to enhance students' social and educational well-being. These activities include college visits and tours, community service, visits to various museums, cultural events and other activities. The last week of the program, students take a trip to a city outside of Wisconsin. There they can visit different colleges, visit famous landmarks and attractions during that week. All students who complete the summer program and pass all of their classes are invited to the year end trip.
Summer Work Study Program
The Upward Work Study Program is offered in the summer for participating juniors and seniors. Students are placed in the career field that they plan to pursue at a post-secondary institution. Partnership agreements are created with local businesses in the area to provide this opportunity to students. Students collect information and receive hands-on experience to make an informed decision about that career. Students work up to 9 hours a week and can earn up to $300 a month. In order to participate in work study, students must be active participants in the program, attend the summer session, submit an application and resume, have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and have approval from their parents/guardians.
Credits
Students receive 0.5 credit towards their high school transcripts upon satisfactory completion of the summer session. |
