2011 Phenomenal Woman Conference Workshops

Session One
10:40-11:30 a.m.

Workshop A:

Native American Women and Tribal Leadership 
Bridgit Martin, Director of Multicultural Student Services- Oneida/Menominee
Kayla Christjohn '11- Oneida

Participants will experience what it means for Native American Women to have leadership roles today within their tribes. This workshop will be interactive and include aspects of Native American Spirituality and Tradition.

Workshop B:

Yoga – A practice for today’s world
Kathleen Kelly-Hoffman, E-RYT, Bay Area Yoga Center

People come to yoga looking for benefits to the body, clarity of the mind and in some instances a mystical experience.  This talk will offer the participant a look into these traditions and practices of yoga.  Yoga is rich with traditions and practices designed to bring the practitioner to a place of direct experience and freedom from mental suffering and pain.   We will discuss the various systems and techniques that are a part of the broader experience of yoga.

Workshop C:

Mentoring “At-Risk” Females in “At –Risk” Communities

Ursula Bunnell, Golden House Green Bay

What does it mean to be “at-risk”? Are their certain indicators? How do we work with “at-risk” populations? Possible responses to these questions will be explored. In addition a panel of individuals who work with “at-risk” females will discuss their work and ways that you can become involved.

Workshop A:

Taking Responsibility and Making a Difference in World Communities Right Where We Are

A conversation in the fulfillment of one’s dreams for self and for the world:  it starts with one, one dream, one person, one share, one action; it is here where it happens.  One person can make a difference, today is the day to start.  Be ready to contribute to others, and to allow others to contribute to you as you prepare to take action.

Workshop B:

The Phenomenal Woman In My Life

This session features a panel of phenomenal men who will share their experiences regarding the extraordinary women who have supported, inspired, and made a difference in their lives.  You will be given the opportunity to pause and reflect on your own life, and think about how your actions and relationships have been influential and inspiring to the people around you.  After all, you are a phenomenal woman or man as well.

Workshop C:

Gender and Power: Reconciling the Masculine and Feminine

This session will aim to explore the implications of the ways in which gender roles affect physical aggression and animosity as we know it in today's society.  As gender is typically viewed in terms of femininity and masculinity, we will unpack these notions, and discuss their causes and effects. We will also uncover examples of aggression as it pertains to gender roles and systems of power and oppression.  Attendees will learn how they can help and different ways they can become effective gender peacemakers.

We will have the privilege of listening to a panel of phenomenal international women students speak about where they are from and what inspired them to make the momentous decision seek an education abroad.  They will share their stories and experiences, and provide us with a small glimpse into their extraordinary lives.

Workshop B:

Women in Islam:  Stereotypes and Realities
Dr. Betsy Bauman, Asistant Professor of Religious Studies

We will explore the images and perceptions of Muslim women that pervade the media in America and discuss more realistic perspectives.  Why are most converts to Islam women?  Why do some Muslim women chose to veil?  Is Islam an oppressive and violent religion?  The workshop will include a brief overview of the basic tenets of Islam plus a glimpse into its amazing diversity.

Workshop C:

EveryBODY is Beautiful: Exploring Body Image, Culture, and the Media
Heidi Bemowski, Ph. D., St. Norbert Staff Psychologist

How many times a day do you find yourself thinking negative thoughts about your body or comparing yourself to someone else? What is body image and where does it come from? This interactive session will help you to gain a better understanding of what body image is and to explore how Western media has influenced body image across cultures. We'll also discuss what you can do to improve your body image and challenge media-driven "ideals."
