2011 Phenomenal Woman Conference Workshops
Session One Workshop A: Yoga – A practice for today’s world People come to yoga looking for benefits to the body, clarity of the mind and in some instances a mystical experience. This talk will offer the participant a look into these traditions and practices of yoga. Yoga is rich with traditions and practices designed to bring the practitioner to a place of direct experience and freedom from mental suffering and pain. We will discuss the various systems and techniques that are a part of the broader experience of yoga. Workshop C: Mentoring “At-Risk” Females in “At –Risk” Communities What does it mean to be “at-risk”? Are their certain indicators? How do we work with “at-risk” populations? Possible responses to these questions will be explored. In addition a panel of individuals who work with “at-risk” females will discuss their work and ways that you can become involved.
Session Two Taking Responsibility and Making a Difference in World Communities Right Where We Are Zully JF Alvarado, Founder of Causes for Change International A conversation in the fulfillment of one’s dreams for self and for the world: it starts with one, one dream, one person, one share, one action; it is here where it happens. One person can make a difference, today is the day to start. Be ready to contribute to others, and to allow others to contribute to you as you prepare to take action. Workshop B: The Phenomenal Woman In My Life Dr. Tom Kunkel, President of St. Norbert College Ryan Reed ’11 Bojan Francuz ‘13 This session features a panel of phenomenal men who will share their experiences regarding the extraordinary women who have supported, inspired, and made a difference in their lives. You will be given the opportunity to pause and reflect on your own life, and think about how your actions and relationships have been influential and inspiring to the people around you. After all, you are a phenomenal woman or man as well. Workshop C: Gender and Power: Reconciling the Masculine and Feminine Amber Duerwaechter ‘12 Kristin Demet ‘12 This session will aim to explore the implications of the ways in which gender roles affect physical aggression and animosity as we know it in today's society. As gender is typically viewed in terms of femininity and masculinity, we will unpack these notions, and discuss their causes and effects. We will also uncover examples of aggression as it pertains to gender roles and systems of power and oppression. Attendees will learn how they can help and different ways they can become effective gender peacemakers.
