Advice for writers
If you’re stuck or cannot come up with ideas to write about, just write as if you’re having a conversation with yourself. Jot down everything that comes to mind. It is a lot easier to eliminate excess parts to your argument than come up with new ones. Do not worry about the organization or logistics in this initial draft, but just focus on writing all of the ideas that surface in your mind. After doing this, sift through your work and form an outline. This is a foolproof way that I start papers if I do not have a clear idea or direction for the paper. It also preserves your voice as a writer if you start with this conversation-like style.

How do you get started on a writing assignment?
The way I approach an assignment depends on my passion for or knowledge of the subject. If I am writing about something that I know a lot about and love, I can sometimes write the entire paper without an outline. However, for the majority of my work, I either start by brainstorming everything I know about the topic and sifting through my ideas, or constructing an outline. Overall, it is important to have a roadmap for your work so that your thought process and organization is clear to the reader.
