Zambia: The "Real" Africa
Located in south central Africa, Zambia is a beautiful country of rolling hills and plains, and peaceful, hard-working people. Zambia was Northern Rhodesia during the colonial period. Independence from Great Britain came in 1964. The government is a representative democracy. A series of economic hardships since Independence have plunged the majority of Zambians into deep poverty. An education is highly prized, but has increasingly become a privilege rather than a right since so many families cannot afford the government school fees. Often called "The Real Africa," Zambia has begun to "Westernize" while also maintaining an authentic African feel and many of its traditional customs. For more about Zambia, the official tourism web site contains excellent information about the history and traditions of this wonderful region of Africa. |
