Green Knights Pick Up One Win on Weekend

ELMHURST, Ill. - St. Norbert College opened the 2011 season with one victory in three matches on its opening weekend.

The Green Knights (1-2) split with a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foes Saturday, losing to Augustana College 5-4 and beating Elmhurst College 8-1. St. Norbert opened its season with a 9-0 loss to UW-Oshkosh Friday in Green Bay.

St. Norbert swept singles action against Elmhurst. Kelly Van Handel beat Stephanie Ruff 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, followed by Nancy Chybowski's 6-4, 6-2 win over Nicole Darga at No. 2. Callie Schroeder topped Jordyn Hoover 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and Anna Reardon beat Kayla Magiapane 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4. Marian Slusarek defeated Jennifer Guenther 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5, and Ariel Bloniarz blanked Ragan Wilson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

Slusarek and Laura Michel beat Magiapane and Guenther 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, and Schroder and Maggie Berens bested Darga and Emily Tarlini 8-3 at No. 3.

Against Augustana, the Vikings' two doubles wins proved to be the difference. Schroder and Emily Rasmussen beaten Augustana's Chelsea Lavin and Emily Kaczmarek 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Chybowski beat Brittany Reece 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, followed by Reardon's 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 win over Meghan Wethington at No. 4 singles. Bloniarz topped Mariah Bardo 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 flight.
