Green Knights Open Baylake Bank Tournament With Win

DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened the season and remained unbeaten all-time in the Baylake Bank Tip-Off Classic with a 58-42 win over Lakeland College on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (1-0) held the Muskies (0-1) to just six field goals in the second half and forced 24 turnovers to pull away. St. Norbert will face Carthage College in Saturday's 3 p.m. championship game. The Lady Reds topped UW-River Falls 57-50 in the other semifinal game.

Lakeland held a 22-17 lead with 3:43 left in the first half before the Green Knights closed out the period with a 13-4 run. Krista Hawkinson hit two 3-pointers during the run, with the latter knotting the score at 26-26. Hawkinson's two free throws with 1.3 seconds left before halftime gave St. Norbert a 30-26 edge at the break.

St. Norbert methodically pulled away in the second half. The Green Knights held a 36-31 lead with 16:04 left before going on an 8-0 run over the next six minutes. Tasha Giese's backdoor layup with 10:19 left gave St. Norbert a 44-31 lead.

The Muskies cut it to 44-37 with 7:59 to go, but the Green Knights went on a quick 9-0 run over the next 4 1/2 minutes, capped off by a Rachel Hagge 3-pointer.

Hawkinson led St. Norbert with 17 points, while Morgan Heim added 13 points. Giese had eight points, and Lauren Carman added seven points off the bench. The Green Knights shot 35.1 percent from the floor, making 20 of 57 shots.

Lakeland was led by Leah Eisner's 18 points. The Muskies shot 39.5 percent (17-for-43) from the floor but were done in by their turnover total.
