Green Knights Place Third at MWC Singles-Doubles Championships

MADISON - The St. Norbert College men's tennis team backed up their claim to third place in the Midwest Conference with a third-place showing at the Singles-Doubles Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Green Knights totaled 39 points to finish behind Grinnell's 105 points and Lake Forest's 63 points. Monmouth took fourth in total points with 38 points.

Eric Koppmann fared the best among St. Norbert singles players, reaching the finals at No. 5. Koppmann fell to Grinnell's Sam Raife 6-2, 6-3 in the flight championship.

Three Green Knights fell in the semifinals in singles action. Chris Schmitz lost at No. 2 to eventual champion Juan Carlson Perez of Grinnell by a 6-1, 6-2 count. Ryan Kerswill lost at No. 4 singles to Grinnell's Daniel Malarkey 6-1, 6-1 in the semis, with Malarkey also going on to win the flight championship. In No. 6 singles action, Nate Tackaberry lost to Lake Forest's Chris Paterakos 6-2, 6-4.

St. Norbert had just one doubles tandem stay in the championship flight. Schmitz and Mike Hyrczyk lost to Grinnell's Perez and D.J. Warden at No. 2 by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Perez and Warden won the flight championship.

Kerswill and Tackaberry won the consolation championship at No. 1 doubles, beating Michael Wajda and Matt Ware of Carroll 10-9 (7-0).
