Big First Half Fuels St. Norbert Rout of Ripon

DE PERE - St. Norbert College used a dominant first half to take control of a 33-6 Midwest Conference win over Ripon College at Schneider Stadium.

The Green Knights (2-1, 2-0 MWC) held the Red Hawks (2-1, 1-1 MWC) to 55 yards in the first half en route to a 27-0 halftime lead. St. Norbert's victory was its 14th in the last 15 meetings with Ripon.

Ripon reached the St. Norbert 25-yard line on the game's opening possession but Red Hawks' quarterback Tom Sawyer was sacked twice to end the possession on downs. The Green Knights then marched 59 yards in 12 plays, finished by a Brad Boockmeier 1-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left in the first quarter.

A blocked punt late in the first quarter set St. Norbert up at the Ripon 23-yard line, and needed only five plays to score on a 2-yard touchdown pass from James Tringali to Patrick Burke for a 14-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, a Sawyer pass was intercepted by Frank Laterza near midfield. Two plays later, Tringali hit Boockmeier down the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown pass with 8:47 left before halftime.

On Ripon's next series, Sawyer was intercepted again, with Zach Klarkowski's 46-yard return to the Ripon 1-yard line leading to Tringali's 1-yard touchdown run for a 27-0 advantage.

Each team scored just one touchdown in a brisk second half, with the game lasting a quick 2 hours 21 minutes. Ripon mounted a 13-play, 73-yard drive, with Stephen Covalt finding Nathan Silloway for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 4:09 left in the third quarter.

St. Norbert answered on its next possession with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Tringali to Brian Fliess with 1:34 left in the period.

Tringali completed 16 of 21 passes for 191 yards with three touchdowns and no interception. Boockmeier caught five passes for 85 yards and one score, while Mark Villers caught four passes for 84 yards. Boockmeier finished with 77 yards rushing and one touchdown on 25 carries. The Green Knights outgained Ripon 285-210 in total offense.

Brian Feltz had a team-high 11 tackles for St. Norbert, while Matt Petersilka added seven stops with two tackles-for-loss.

Ripon's option attack finished with 128 yards rushing on 54 attempts, an average of 2.4 yards per carry. Connor Greenwald finished with a team-high 37 yards on 13 carries. Covalt completed 3 of 5 passes for 53 yards and one touchdown in relief of Sawyer.
