DE PERE - St. Norbert College captured its ninth Midwest Conference championship following a 1-0 win over Grinnell College in a MWC contest at Schneider Stadium.
The victory, coupled with Monmouth College's 2-2 tie at Carroll University, gives the Green Knights a four-point lead on the Fighting Scots in the MWC standings with one game remaining. St. Norbert, which last won a MWC women's soccer title in 2011, will host the MWC Tournament on Nov. 8-9.
St. Norbert (12-3-2, 8-1 MWC) took the lead early on Katie Vanden Avond's 32nd goal of the season at the 13 minutes 19 seconds mark. Kaitlin Malliet threaded a ball on the ground perfectly through the defense to Vanden Avond's feet. Vanden Avond was wide open and finished cleanly.
The Green Knights outshot the Pioneers (11-6-1, 6-3-1) by a 15-2 margin. Sarah Platzer made one saves for St. Norbert, while Jordan Young made five stops for the Pioneers.
