WAUKESHA - The Midwest Conference championship hopes for the St. Norbert College men's soccer team took a blow in a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Carroll University at Schneider Stadium.
The Green Knights, who have won five of the last six league regular-season championships, dropped to 3-3 overall in losing their league opener.
St. Norbert got shutout despite having a man advantage for the final 27 minutes of the match following a Carroll red card.
Following a scoreless first half, Carroll scored the game's only goal at 53:49, when Marc Hietpas knocked in a header off a corner kick from Bram Daelemans. It was one of only two shots Carroll put on goal in the game.
St. Norbert outshot Carroll 7-6, with Pioneers goaltender Stanislaw Miaskowski making five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Green Knights held an 11-8 advantage in fouls and both teams had just one corner kick.
