St. Norbert Finishes Fourth at MWC Championship

MADISON - St. Norbert College ended its season with a fourth-place finish in the Midwest Conference after a solid showing at the MWC Singles and Doubles Championships at Nielsen Tennis Center.

The Green Knights registered 39 points to eke into fourth place ahead of Lake Forest College, which had 37 points. Conference champion Grinnell College totaled 93 points, while Monmouth College had 71 points. Carroll University was third with 48 points.

St. Norbert's lone finals qualifier was its No. 3 doubles tandem of Josh Sweere and Casey Brice. The pair lost to Grinnell's C.J. Ray and Cole Miller 6-1, 6-4 for the No. 3 doubles title. Sweere and Brice advanced with a grueling three-set win over Carroll's Nick Schultz and Alexander Reid by a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-3 score.

The Green Knights had a doubles team reach the semifinals when Tim Hartwick and Leon Gilman advanced to that round at No. 2 flight. Hartwick and Gilman lost to Grinnell's Emilio Gomez and Tracy Johnson 6-1, 6-2.

In singles action, Gilman fell in the semifinals to Grinnell's Tommy Pitcher 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4. Nate Gosz reached the semifinals at No. 3 before losing to Monmouth's David Stewart 6-4, 6-4.

Sweere won the consolation title of the No. 2 flight with a 9-8 (7-5) win over Lake Forest's Ellis Lora-Arceo.
