DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened the 2014-15 season raising its fourth national championship in seven years before defeating Marian University 5-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Norbert wasted little time taking the lead when Erik Cooper finished for the Green Knights' first goal of the season just 1 minutes 28 second into the game. Marian answered at 12:24 with a goal by Brodie Jamieson on a delayed-penalty score. St. Norbert retook the lead on the ensuing penalty when Tyler Zepeda finished a breakaway at 13:49. Ross Pavek gave St. Norbert a 3-1 lead with a goal at 18:51 of the first period.

Pavek added a second goal with a power-play goal deflected in off the pipe at 8:53 of the second period. Blake Thompson then converted a 5-on-3 power-play goal when he came down the slot and cleanly beat Marian goaltender Mike Baldwin at 17:28.

Marian scored the third period's only goal on a power-play goal by Mark Whiteley just 1:48 into the period.

St. Norbert outshot the Sabres 32-18, including 12-4 in a decisive second period. The Green Knights were 2-for-5 on the power play, while Marian was 1-for-5. David Jacobson made 16 saves for St. Norbert, while Baldwin made 27 stops for Marian.
