St. Norbert Wears Down Red Hawks

DE PERE - St. Norbert College remained in sole possession of first place in the Midwest Conference with a 62-48 win over Ripon College in a Midwest Conference game on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (14-3, 11-1) stayed one game in front of Carroll University in the loss column with the win. The two teams meet for the second time in 11 days to determine a share of first place at 3 p.m. Saturday at Schuldes Sports Center.

Ripon's Megan Jensen scored a basket on the first possession of the game, but the Green Knights wasted little time taking control of the game after that. The Green Knights went on a 12-0 run to take a 12-2 lead at 16:04 on a pair of Tasha Giese free throws.

The Green Knights built their lead to 19-5 on a Rachel Hagge 3-pointer at the 14:06 mark. Ripon (2-15, 2-10) trailed 23-14 with 7:05 left int he half, but St. Norbert went back ahead by double digits at the 6:40 mark on a pair of Brianna Byrne free throws. The lead, which was 36-17 at halftime, never went below double digits after that.

St. Norbert led by as many as 26 points in the second half, holding a 50-24 edge with 9:50 left.

Stephanie Weigman came off the bench to lead St. Norbert with 13 points. Byrne added 12 points, while Heidi Van Sistine added 11 points. The Green Knights shot 55 percent (22-for-40) from the floor.

Jensen led Ripon with 13 points. The Red Hawks shot 28.6 percent from the floor, making 16 of 56 field-goal attempts.
