St. Norbert Roars Back to Split With Carroll

DE PERE - St. Norbert College salvaged a split in its Midwest Conference North Division doubleheader with Carroll University, charging back to win 17-1 after opening the twinbill with a 10-8 loss at Larry Van Alstine Field at Mel Nicks Sports Complex.

The Green Knights improved to 16-12 overall and 9-6 in the MWC North and can clinch a berth in the MWC Tournament with a win Monday at Lawrence University.

St. Norbert scored runs in six of its seven at-bats in the nightcap, pounding out 16 hits against seven Carroll pitchers. Tyler Banovich had an RBI single and Adam Enwiya a two-run home run in the first inning for a 3-0 lead.

The Green Knights added a run in the third inning on a solo home run by Griffin Jack. St. Norbert scored twice in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Tyler Brown and a bases-loaded walk by Banovich. Carroll got a run back in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Jacob Langford.

St. Norbert broke the game open in the fifth inning with four runs. Robbie Dombrowski had a run-scoring single, while Derek Klegin drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Banovich then had a two-out, two-run single for a 10-1 lead.

Dombrowski pounded a three-run home run in the sixth inning, while Jack added a grand slam in the seventh inning to finish off the rout. Jack's two home runs marked the first time a St. Norbert player hit two in one game since Garrick Fisher hit two against Lawrence on April 25, 2011.

St. Norbert's five home-run game marked the first time the Green Knights hit that many in a single contest since connecting with six circuit clouts against Carroll on April 6, 2013.

Banovich was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Dombrowski was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Jack was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBIs, while Brown and Sean Grant were both 2-for-4.

Sam Neville earned the win, allowing four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings pitched.

In the opener, Carroll rallied from an 8-6 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning - keyed by a three-run home run by Dylan Grove.

Enwiya had a two-run double in the fourth for St. Norbert, while Jack's two-run double fueled a five-run fifth for the Green Knights, who led 7-6 after five innings. Enwiya added a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning.

Banovich was 3-for-4 in the opener, while Enwiya, Jack and Dombrowski all had two hits apiece. Enwiya drove in four runs in the opener.

Banovich took the loss in relief, allowing three hits and four runs in two innings pitched.
