St. Norbert Wins Tournament Opener

DE PERE - St. Norbert College won its season opener, topping Northland College 73-48 in a first-round game of the Associated Financial Group Tip-Off Tournament at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights will face UW-Stout in the championship game at 3 p.m. Sunday. Stout topped North Central College 87-70 in the other first-round contest.

St. Norbert held Northland scoreless the first 7 minutes 23 seconds of the game in jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Lumberjills cut the deficit to 18-13 with 3:28 left in the half, but the Green Knights went on a 9-3 run to close out the half. Morgan Strasser's 3-pointer with 1:06 left in the half gave the Green Knights a 26-13 lead before settling on a 27-16 lead at halftime.

The Green Knights opened the second half on a 25-5 run to take a 52-21 lead with 12:15 left to play. St. Norbert led by as many as 33 points in the second half.

Twelve different Green Knights hit the scoring column, with Strasser's 12 points the only player ind ouble figures. Kristy Pelky and Jamie Kuhl had nine points apiece. St. Norbert shot 49.1 percent from the floor and had 25 turnovers.

Northland was led by Maria Mackey's 10 points. The Lumberjills, who had 34 turnovers, shot 33.3 percent from the floor making 15 of 45 field goals.
