St. Norbert Topples Cornell; Heads to NCAA Division III Tournament

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - St. Norbert College clinched its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance since 2011 with a thrilling 3-2 win over top-seeding Cornell College in the championship game of the Midwest Conference Tournament at Small Multi-Sport Center.

The Green Knights (16-14) will be appearing in their eighth NCAA Division III Tournament after knocking off the Rams (22-7) by scores of 25-17, 23-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-12.

St. Norbert survived a tense fifth set, leading 13-9 before Cornell scored three consecutive points to get to within 13-12. Lexie Van Hiel's kill brought St. Norbert to match point, and a Cornell attacking error clinched the victory.

The Green Knights never trailed and were never tied in the fifth set after being staked to a 3-0 lead to open the stanza.

St. Norbert also survived a hard-fought fourth set. Cornell held an 18-15 lead before St. Norbert scored four consecutive points to take a 19-18 lead on a Halie Ferry kill. The Green Knights led 21-19 before Cornell went on a 4-2 run to knot the set at 23-23. Anika Johnson's kill and a Cornell attacking error tipped the scales the Green Knights' way.

The Green Knights hit .258 for the match, getting 60 kills with 19 errors in 159 attempts. Ferry had a match-high 19 kills, while Johnson added 13, Hannah Johnshoy 12 and Van Hiel 11. Anna Berghoefer had 27 assists and Emily Rohloff 22 asasists.

Aubree Antosch led the back row with 21 digs. Johnson had a team-high four blocks.

Cornell hit .265 for the match, getting 65 kills against 22 errors in 162 attempts. Diamond Boyd had 18 kills to pace the Rams.
