Green Knights Claim Fifth Straight Win With Sweep of MSOE

DE PERE - St. Norbert College won for the fifth consecutive game and in the process swept Milwaukee School of Engineering in a two-game Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series with a 7-3 win at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (7-7, 4-4 NCHA) fell behind for the 10th time in 14 games this season when MSOE got a breakaway goal from Will Gauthier at the 12:46 mark of the first period. That goal was the only marker during the first 20 minutes, despite St. Norbert being shorthanded for 9 minutes 57 seconds during the first period while killing off five power-play chances.

St. Norbert struck quickly in the second period when Michael Spethmann scored at the 1:45 mark. The Green Knights surged ahead with a pair of goals 79 seconds apart midway through the period. Peyton Frantti scored at 8:10, followed by Kurt Black at 9:29. St. Norbert would carry those goals into second intermission with a 3-1 lead.

The Raiders (6-4-2, 1-4-2) would get to within a goal when Garrett Gintoli scored a power-play marker at 9:02 of the third period. St. Norbert would respond quickly, going back ahead by two goals when Max Brainin registered his first collegiate goal just 38 seconds later. The Green Knights would push ahead 6-2 when Kurt Black scored his 11th goal of the season at 12:18, and Brendon Gysbers cleaned up a power-play opportunity at 15:30.

Gauthier would score a power-play goal at 18:17, but St. Norbert would account for the final goal when Ben Schmidling potted an empty-netter with 39 seconds remaining.

Six St. Norbert skaters finished with multi-point games. Black had two goals and one assist for three points, while Brainin had one goal and two assists for three points. Frantti and Schmidling each had one goal and one assist for two points, while Dominick Sacco and Luke Davison had two assists apiece.

MSOE outshot St. Norbert 39-31. Colby Entz turned away 36 shots for the Green Knights, while Rock Boynton made 24 stops for the Raiders.

St. Norbert was 1-for-3 on the power play, while MSOE was 2-for-8.
