Green Knights Take Control Early Against Cornell

DE PERE - St. Norbert College rode a stellar defensive effort in the first half to a 77-57 win over Cornell College in a Midwest Conference game at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights took a 33-16 halftime lead, holding the Rams to a 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) shooting accuracy from the floor in the first half.

St. Norbert took a 10-3 lead early behind a pair of 3-pointers from Nolan Beirne and two baskets from Connor Curtis. Following a Rams' basket, St. Norbert went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-5 lead. Michael Payant and Jack Pettit had hoops while Jared Murphy canned a 3-pointer and Beirne finished off a conventional three-point play for a 20-5 lead halfway through the first half.

The Green Knights eventually built a 28-10 lead on a Joe Ciriacks jumper with 4:45 left in the half, with St. Norbert taking its 17-point lead into intermission.

St. Norbert's lead remained in double digits the entire second half, with the closest Cornell getting at 49-38 with 9:59 left after a Marcus Quirk 3-pointer. Murphy and Beirne connected on baskets, and St. Norbert was never seriously threatened the rest of the way, eventually leading 63-43 with 5:44 to go.

The Green Knights were 31-for-67 (46.3 percent) from the floor. Beirne had a game-high 17 points, while Murphy finished with 16 points. Curtis totaled 14 points and 14 rebounds, with 10 of his rebounds coming in the first 11 minutes of the game. Ciriacks added 11 points for St. Norbert, which had just seven turnovers.

Cornell shot 37 percent (20-for-54) from the floor. Cooper Kabela had 16 points, while Jordan Magnani added 13 points and Devin Davis 10 points.
