DE PERE - St. Norbert College sophomore wide receiver Samuel Staehling enjoyed a banner season on the field, and has now reaped a significant honor off the field.

Staehling, who led the Green Knights during a record-setting season on the gridiron, was named a first-team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) NCAA Division III Football Academic All-American. He is the first sophomore in any sport in St. Norbert history to be named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American. Staehling is also the only sophomore among this year's first-team selections.

Staehling, a Plymouth native, owns a perfect 4.00 grade point average with a major in biology/pre-medicine. Staehling hauled in a St. Norbert-record 16 touchdown receptions in 2017. He totaled 41 receptions overall for 916 yards, good for 22.3 yards per reception.

In just two seasons, Staehling has 25 touchdown receptions to rank him third in St. Norbert history. He also has 72 receptions for 1,615 yards in his career. A Dean's List student and Academic All-Midwest Conference honoree, Staehling was a first-team All-Midwest Conference choice in 2017. He was the MWC Newcomer of the Year in 2016 and earned the MWC Elite 20 Award for football in 2017.

Staehling is the ninth St. Norbert football player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America mention. He is the sixth first-team Academic All-America football honoree, joining Matt Lang (1986 and 1987), Karl Zacharias (1986 and 1987), Mike Whitehouse (1988 and 1989), Mike Krueger (1999) and Dan Sjoquist (2011).

Since the inception of the CoSIDA Academic All-America program in 1952, 51 St. Norbert College student-athletes have been selected for 70 awards. Staehling is St. Norbert's 24th overall first-team Academic All-American, with those 24 totaling 33 first-team awards.

To be eligible for national or regional selection, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director. The Academic All-America team is selected after All-District teams are picked from eight geographic regions nationally.
