Vandenberg Leads Green Knights at MWC Singles Championships

MADISON - St. Norbert College junior Alex Vandenberg had the best performance for the Green Knights at the Midwest Conference Singles Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Vandenberg advanced to the championship of the No. 6 flight before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Grinnell College's Henry Johnson. Vandenberg topped Lawrence University's Matt Chan 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals after blanking Cornell College's Auston Sack 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Jordan Crump won the consolation title at No. 5 with an 8-1 win over Cornell's Connor Schanen. Crump earned an 8-0 win over Ripon College's Daniel Garcia in the consolation semifinals. Crump opened with a 7-6, 6-1 loss to Lawrence's Evan Oriel in the quarterfinals.

Ben Vande Zande won the consolation title at No. 1 with an 8-0 win over Knox College's Jared Schwarz. Vande Zande posted an 8-0 win over Monmouth's Alex Martin in the consolation semifinals after opening with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Illinois College's Miguel Vaca in the semifinals.

Robert Quinlan advanced to the semifinals at No. 3 before suffering a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Monmouth College's Joseph Shie. Quinlan earned a 7-6, 7-0 quarterfinal win over Cornell's Tucker Barnes.

John Zanotti (No. 2) and Matt La Violette (No. 4) each lost in the consolation semifinals. Zanotti lost 8-5 to Illinois College's Nazar Otunchiev and La Violette dropped an 8-4 decision to Illinois College's Cameron Doerr.
