Records tumble before Green Knight hockey onslaught

Records continue to fall to Kyle Jones ’08, the winningest goaltender in NCAA Division III history.

The Green Knight hockey player’s career record currently stands at 78-10-8. He has a 1.69 lifetime goals against average (GAA) and .922 save percentage.

Jones extended his Division III record for career shutouts to 20 with 29 saves in a 3-0 win over St. Scholastica on Saturday. The shutout of St. Scholastica was Jones’ fifth shutout this season.

Jones’ shutout record is the second-most all-time by any collegiate goalie. Only current Buffalo Sabre Ryan Miller has more, with 26 shutouts at Michigan State from 1999-2002.

The next closest active Division III goaltender in wins to Jones is Oswego State’s Ryan Scott, who is 57-20-6.

Jones also owns or shares NCAA Division III records with shutouts in a season (seven), consecutive shutouts (four) and consecutive shutout minutes (337:22).

Jones, the 2006 NCHA Player of the Year, is 12-1-2 this season with a 1.29 GAA and .941 save percentage.

Jones’ is not the only good news from Green Knight hockey this season. Senior forward Mark Belanger ’08 has scored in 20 of 22 games this season.

In fact, the hockey previews distributed to the media by sports information director Dan Lukes now include regular sections headlined “Jones Jabber” and “Belanger Bits.”

Belanger carried a nine-game scoring streak into this season, giving him a point in 29 of his last 31 games. With 121 career points, he is tied for eighth with Rob Garofolo ’93 on St. Norbert’s career scoring list. He trails Shane Dickson ’01 by two points for seventh at 123 points.

Belanger’s 56 career goals leaves him seventh all-time at St. Norbert. He needs four goals to match Connor Hughes ’06 in sixth with 60 career markers.

St. Norbert has been ranked in the Division III Poll for 115 consecutive weeks. The Green Knights earned the No. 1 ranking for the first time this season when the team earned the top spot in the Dec. 10, 2007, poll, and have stayed there for four consecutive polls.

Watch for your Winter 2008 St. Norbert College Magazine, which includes a feature on recruiting a winning hockey team.
