Incoming students begin making new college friends early, and close to home

When Casey Cox ’11 went to the admissions reception for newly admitted St. Norbert students at Milwaukee’s University Club several years ago, he was a little nervous. A high school senior at the time, Cox worried the reception would merely fuel his apprehension about heading off to college the following fall.

Instead, he walked out a few hours later not only positive he wanted to attend St. Norbert, but with a new acquaintance and roommate, Mason Wesenberg ’11.

“That reception was the reason I’m at SNC,” says Cox, who still lives with Wesenberg, now a close friend.

Formally started in 2006, these admissions receptions aim to give prospective students and their families a little taste of the college common life by sending professors, current students, alumni, parents and staff – even the president – out into the community for an evening of informal chatting, food and drinks.

The receptions are held annually in January and February, either in the homes of alumni or in spaces like the University Club. Wisconsin sites for the 2010 events are Beaver Dam, Green Bay, Kimberly, Madison and Milwaukee; receptions will also be held in Chicago and the Twin Cities.

Cox said he and his parents were very impressed with their experience. The St. Norbert ambassadors made everyone feel welcome and appreciated, they say.

Alumni, students and staff spoke about what the college had to offer and how beneficial a St. Norbert diploma was. In between these brief talks, the room was buzzing with informal conversations, including his own with Wesenberg.

Sadie and Angela Podewils ’11 of Greenfield, Wis., had a similarly positive experience. In fact, the two raved so much about the openness and spirit of everyone they met that Podewils’ father, Jim, regretted he hadn’t been able to attend.

“That reception certainly made my daughter know this was where she wanted to go for sure,” he says. “And it certainly made my wife and I feel a lot more comfortable about her decision, too.”

The Podewils were even happier after Angela finished her first semester and had had a wonderful experience, so they volunteered to help at the 2008 event – and every reception since.

“The college truly has a caring attitude towards the students,” says Jim Podewils. “It’s not just something they say – they really put it into practice. We wanted to continue going to these receptions so we could tell others how happy we are.”
