College website goes mobile

What’s for dinner? These days, the college community and campus visitors are reaching into their pockets, backpacks and briefcases for their mobile devices to answer this question.

The launch of St. Norbert’s new mobile website introduces a “thumb-friendly” way to access essential campus information, including the dining menus for the new Ruth’s Marketplace.

Why mobile?
As experts try to predict the next “big thing,” mobile remains at the center of the conversation. The number of web-capable smartphones is on the rise, and so is the number of people using these devices to browse the web. It is predicted that by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common web access device worldwide (Gartner Research).

With this in mind, the office of communications and the information technology department teamed to create a version of the college’s website optimized for an on-the-go audience. The mobile site features abbreviated content formatted for quicker entry and faster loading times.

Also important to the team was delivering information appropriate to a mobile audience. The team used a mix of web traffic reports and small focus groups to uncover the type of content people seek from the St. Norbert website when they are on the move.
To access the mobile website from your smartphone or web-capable mobile device, you launch your web browser and visit

When you enter the site, you’ll get access to:

•    The latest campus news, reported by the office of communications.
•    Green Knight athletic schedules, rosters and news.
•    Directory information for St. Norbert students, faculty and staff (plus the ability to make a call or send an e-mail with a single click!).
•    Dining menus you can filter for gluten-free, nutritious and vegetarian options.
•    An interactive campus map.
•    Emergency information.

Since its launch on Jan. 23, the mobile website has had more than 61,000 visits. No surprise, its most popular content areas are dining and mySNC.
