Curlers head to national championships

Winning the Wisconsin state curling event has sent Joy Pahl (Business Administration) and her young team to the top. Pahl, daughter Chloe, 13, and teammates have qualified for the U.S. National Club Curling Championships in Minnesota.

Pahl says she is lucky enough to be able to enjoy her passion for curling while spending time with her family. Curling is a sport that brings together many levels of skill and participants of all ages.

“This sport is unique in that you can find yourself playing against an Olympian,” says Pahl. “You could socialize with, and play against, a team that is comprised of world-class level athletes.”

Pahl started curling on a regular basis in 2002, but she grew up watching her grandparents and her father compete. She includes her family in the experience and her daughter has acquired a taste for the competition. In fact, her other teammates (Erin, 15, and Kimberly, 16) are friends of her daughter.

Beating out the adult competition at the Wisconsin State Women’s Curling Club Championship was an achievement the entire group worked hard for, says Pahl. Chloe and her friends were competing at state level for the first time.

The team feels they are ready to take on the best adult women’s curling teams in the nation. Pahl says the team came together to curl and stays together to win, and they waste no time as they work towards their goal while having loads of fun.

Readers of the latest issue of the St. Norbert College Magazine saw that Pahl’s love for curling benefited the students in her Communio group, too. She took the group out onto the ice for one of the off-campus experiences that characterizes the pilot freshman course.
