Director of international education honored with prestigious award

On the podium, the assembled VIPs included the daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu, the current director of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) and Duleep Deosthale of the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy.

Deosthale, as first holder of the AIEA’s Timothy J. Rutenber Award, was there to honor this year’s recipient. In fact, the only guest whose presence was somewhat in question was the still-unwitting honoree.

Joe Tullbane (International Education) almost missed the luncheon where he was to be surprised with the award, because he was busy helping a colleague from another institution work through a problem in its international education operation.

“It is that kind of dedication to the field that sets him apart from his peers,” said AIEA director Darla Deardorff, of Duke University.

The Rutenber Award is given for truly exceptional service to the AIEA, service to the field of international education overall, and service to the individual chief international officers of colleges and universities around the world.

Tullbane is the fourth person to hold the award, following honorees from the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and Deosthale of the Universita Cattolica.

The presentation took place at the AIEA’s annual conference, where this year’s keynote speaker was Nantombi Naomi Tutu, the daughter of Bishop Desmond Tutu.

Tullbane said, “I consider this recognition to be for St. Norbert College as much as for me. St. Norbert College has made enormous strides in the international education field over the past few years and is often used as an example of what a small college can do. For that progress to be recognized by our peers around the world is genuinely amazing.”
