A word – music, too – from the editor

In this new feature, St. Norbert College Magazine editor Susan Allen (Communications) reviews current web exclusives and brings readers up to date on stories covered in the latest issue.

Seating planks from the old Minahan Stadium became raw materials for recent work by Bill Bohné (Art), and when he started to explain his process to us, we reached for the camera. Video of Bohné explaining the pieces is just one of the experiences readers can enjoy via the online edition of St. Norbert College Magazine.

Multimedia web exclusives have been a feature of the magazine since 2008. It’s a chance for us to share stories told in new ways and to give readers a richer experience.

For instance, in the spring issue, you may have read about the farm photography project of Elizabeth Groshek ’11. Online, we can bring you a full gallery of her work, with audio commentary from Groshek herself. It’s worth taking a look: Her images are beautiful and her approach very insightful.

We introduced readers to three Norbertine sisters from Slovakia, at St. Norbert to improve their English. We found out they sing quite beautifully, too! Online, you can hear the sisters (along with St. Norbert music students) adding to worship at St. Norbert Abbey.

More to enjoy
The online magazine allows us to offer more for readers who want to go deeper into topics that pique their interest in the print magazine. This issue’s web extras also include a video interview with Packers GM Ron Wolf; a blog from Antarctica; video interviews from our vibrant Celebrating Student and Staff/Faculty Collaborations event; and more.

This just in
While we have your interest, we’d like to bring you updates on several stories that ran in the spring issue.

• An anonymous gift of $1.5 million to build a new locker room rounds up the gifts to Schneider Stadium to a total of $12 million. (Incidentally, this much-appreciated donation allowed St. Norbert College to set a new gift record of $15.5 million in 2010-11, with several months still remaining in the fiscal year.) The stadium story appeared in Sports (page 31).

Carol Bruess ’90 is confirmed to speak on “What Happy Couples Do: Stuff We All Should Know about Communication and Relationships” at Day at St. Norbert, May 7. Carol's story was told in “What happens when research gets real.”

• Construction has now started on the Ariens Family Welcome Center. This significant expansion of the current admissions building is set to be completed this summer. The Welcome Center project was introduced in “Ground to be broken for transformed Union, Welcome Center this spring.

• Men’s basketball ended its season ranked No. 16 in the Top 25 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second consecutive year. Ultimately, the Green Knights couldn’t stop a hot-shooting University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point team and saw its season end in a 70-49 loss to the defending national champion. The Green Knights ended their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance at 20-6. Guard/forward Paul Mallers ’11 was profiled in Sports (page 30).
